England squad v Pakistan announced

Buttler and Bess replacing Vince and Leach.

Nick Gubbins has missed out, but Stoneman must be in the last chance saloon, so he may well feature later in the year.

Looks like Malan will bat at 3 but I am puzzled at selection of Buttler. What is the value of an IPL slogger in test cricket?

If it's a 'green top' then Gubbo may well appear abetter player out of the team

I guess there had to be changes after the dismal displays in the winter, but one does get the feeling that Ed Smith feels the need to come up with some left-field choices.

Mark Stoneman is a very lucky boy. But I do feel rather sorry for James Vince. The general complaint against him is that he plays too many attractive cameos. So he a match-saving 201 in over 500 minutes at Taunton, incidentally leaving the in-favour new boy Dom Bess wicketless, but apparently that's not enough.

Vince has played 13 tests and averages <25 so I don't think he can have many complaints. Stoneman averages 30.17 from 10 tests which is marginally better, but I think he needs a big score in one of the 2 Pakistan tests, or Gubbins (or Jennings/Hameed/etc.) will be playing against India.

Saturday’s Daily Mail reported that Nick Gubbins was being seriously considered for selection for this series, but perhaps it counted against him that injury caused him to miss Middlesex’s first four first-class matches of the season, even though he marked his return by scoring 107 and 99. Had he not been injured and he scored heavily in the matches he missed, he could have got in. At least Gubbo is now likely to be available for our Royal London Cup campaign, where he will look to replicate the form he showed on England Lions’ recent tour of West Indies, when he played all three 50-over matches, scoring centuries in the first two matches before suffering his injury and being unable to bat in the third match.

Normally, county openers such as Gubbo are seen as potential candidates to be Alastair Cook’s umpteenth opening partner. However, Cook’s recent form means that England could soon be looking for Cook’s replacement. Cook silenced such talk with his 244 not out in the fourth Test of the Ashes, but the talk resurfaced when he scored just 23 in four innings on the tour of New Zealand. Well, at least he knows what he needs to do to silence the talk! Mark Stoneman scored two fifties in New Zealand, and seems to be in better Test form than Cook, so it would have been harsh to drop Stoneman.

James Vince’s absence is a bit of a surprise.

After Jack Leach broke his thumb, England have simply looked to his spin twin Dom Bess. A lot of people have been wondering whether Leach and Bess can bowl as well in Test matches as they can at Taunton, so at least those players are being given an opportunity to prove they can.

After England’s winter saw them record two draws and five defeats in the Test matches in Australia and New Zealand, there will be a bit of pressure for them compensate for those results when they host Pakistan and India, otherwise people are going to start speculating whether England have ever had such a poor 12 months in this format.

England are currently fifth in the ICC Test rankings, with Pakistan 7th. Pakistan will enter this series on the back of a hard-fought win in Ireland’s maiden Test.

Don't bother applying yourself in unfavourable early English conditions to make runs; absent yourself. Go to India and slog instead. What an insult to the Championship.

Decision to drop Vince was presumably made afore his 201no. Smith rang him and said keep making runs and the door is not closed.

Stoneman a lucky boy. Torygraph reckons Root up to three and Malan at four and Bairstow at five will be the early order.

Cook has managed to show signs of a return to form. However the concern over the batting order remains. These are not poor batsmen but they are being tested at the highest level.

Hopefully the situation will settle down soon. Bess was an imaginative choice during the absence of Leach.

The England bowling was pretty toothless in the first test, yet we have the same again.

Malan needs a big score . An average of under 30 for your no. 4 is not good. Quite honestly he looked out of his class.

I was surprised Jennings was chosen ahead of Gubbins but it is good news for Middlesex.

I think Malan's form in Australia will ensure he is safe for the next 2 or 3 tests, but unless he starts scoring he will be back with Middlesex for the latter half of the season.

An interesting selection for the 2nd Test. Stoneman's omission was expected. Jennings will probably open if we do not recall Woakes to rejoin an unchanged seam attack.

It may appear to be harsh to omit a wicketless Bess because of his promising batting.

If Woakes does return then it is a case of who to leave out.

Where would he field? Suggest on the boundary so he could do those high one handed catches for which he was noted.

Debutant Sam Curran (19), Keaton Jennings and Chris Woakes replace Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman and Mark Wood. Pakistan make one injury_enforced change to their middle-order.

Congratulations to England on winning the 2nd NatWest Test by an innings and 55 runs, squaring the series 1-1.

I find it ridiculous having just 2 match series
