Middlesex v Essex, Royal London Cup, Radlett, 17th May

Middlesex will begin their Royal London Cup campaign v Essex at Radlett on Thursday.

Whereas responsibility for our Twenty20 campaign has been passed to Daniel Vettori, who comes in with his own ideas about to go about things, responsibility in this competition remains with the same coaches as our County Championship campaign. This will make team selection interesting, as our RLC campaign in 2017 saw us select Ravi Patel and Nick Gubbins for 7 matches each, give Nick Compton and Sam Robson some matches, and not select Nathan Sowter at all, whereas our subsequent Twenty20 campaign saw an almost opposite selection strategy, with Sowter being one of our best players, Patel, Compo and Robbo not involved, and Gubbo not playing until our last few matches. I have always felt that 50-over matches should be played like an extended Twenty20 match rather than a shortened first-class match, meaning that I believe that selection for 50-over matches should be similar to Twenty20.

Gubbo is likely to be available for the whole competition after being left out of England’s squad for their Test series v Pakistan, which is a boost considering he showed what he can do in 50-over matches by scoring two centuries for England Lions in West Indies in the spring. Dawid Malan has been included in the Test squad, although hopefully he won’t be prevented from playing and captaining us in this match as well as Sunday’s visit of Kent to Radlett, before handing the reins to Steven Finn.

Last season, we finished second bottom in our group, while Essex finished top.

Picking Robson would be a mistake I think he needs a bit of time in the middle with the 2nd X1 to try to find a bit of form.
Eskinazi to open with Gubbins and maybe a place for Holden.
Always been impressed with Sowter in the T20's so would like to see him involved and Harris must be a cert.
Lot of responsibility on Malan & Morgan if the openers go cheap
Not that optimistic!!!

Ah. That brings back the not to be forgotten shambles at Canterbury where chasing 200 was beyond us.

Kent's only win in the competition last term.

I know that it would risk him picking up an injury and getting out of ‘first-class mode’ ahead of England’s Test series v Pakistan, which starts seven days after this match, but I am disappointed that Dawid Malan has been prevented from playing in this match. At least it means that Stevie Eskinazi and/or Max Holden are in contention to make their maiden List A appearances for Middlesex, and that Steven Finn will get the honour of captaining us for any matches he plays in this competition. At least we are set to have Eoin Morgan available for our whole campaign.

I am very surprised about Nathan Sowter being left out after he impressed in our Twenty20 campaign in 2017, in which he took 14 wickets. Also, I think he has put in some impressive performances with bat and ball for our 2nd XI in recent weeks (although it is difficult to find comprehensive statistics about individual 2nd XI performances to back up my assertions). However, as is always the case when someone misses out, there is a beneficiary in this, as it means that Ravi Patel is set to play, which is great news.

I was hopeful that James Fuller would play in this competition, especially as he is seen as being very well-suited to limited-overs cricket, but I am not sure he is fit enough yet.

It is excellent news that fast bowler Hilton Cartwright has extended his time at the club until the end of June. Hopefully he will bowl as well as he has done in the County Championship. It is a shame that he has proven to be a bit of a number 11 with the bat, but you never know, maybe our main batsmen will bat well enough for Cartwright to not need to bat.

Finn has spoken to ECB Reporters Network ahead of captaining us in this competition.

Unless teams decide to field a slip cordon against him Cartwright should do OK with the bat in the 50 over game - the attempted drives that have been going to 2nd slip will go to third man.

The good news is that there is a live feed from Radlett.

The bad news is that it is almost unwatchable, at least on my connection. Still, you've got to try it to iron out the kinks.

I'm a little concerned there might be a cry of "we'll get them in wides" at some stage during the Essex innings!

Not just me then? The stream is still on the second over although the game is in the fifth over, and it's buffering endlessly instead of playing. Very annoying.

I reckon that if you could not see clearly you were lucky. What has happened to our club? In 2016, we went into August alive in all three competitions and we won the biggest of them . I said at the time that if we could continue to do that (alright the structure of the season is different now but you know what I mean) we would keep winning things.

We now seem way, way off that.

I will go to Radlett on Sunday hoping for better. Can we have Holden and Sowter in the side please?

Possibly George Scott, too.

And if someone starts bleating about taking the positives from today, I shall have a seizure.

Similar to Middlesex’s first innings v Gloucestershire at Lord's in the County Championship, a lot of our players reached double figures, yet no-one went on to make a big score, such as the 134 Tom Westley made.

I would also like to see Nathan Sowter involved in this competition, but it should surely have to be alongside Ravi Patel rather than instead of him after Patel‘s three wickets and 10 economical overs today.

This result puts pressure on us to beat Kent at Radlett on Sunday, as it would leave us with a mountain to climb if our first two matches in this campaign result in two home defeats. Only the top three teams in each nine-team group qualify for the knockout stages, with the top team in each group going straight to a home semi-final, and the runner-up in each group hosting the third-placed side in the other group in a play-off.

Dreadful stuff ,par score 300+ well short
Bowling looked like throw downs apart from Ravi
Fielding awful and leadership none existent
Watching their innings was an embarrassing episode
for our cricket..
Rant over...

catches dropped, two in one Finn over at the start did not auger well defending an inadequate score.

Up to the thirteenth over when we reached 79 our first wicket fell. From then on things fell away. The introduction of spin, Harmer, brought that about. We added a further 13 runs off the next six overs.

A further catch was dropped and there were some fielding mishaps, one a trifle unlucky. Gubbo was in constant action.

Harmer getting Morgs out with the very last ball of his spell certainly truncated our score.

Ravi took 3 for 41 off his ten overs and skipper Finn showed faith in him. We batted 48.3 overs. Essex completed their win in over 43 pacing their knock well.

A decent turnout and a sunny if windy day.

Suddenly we seem dreadfully short of pace bowlers.

I struggle to see the sense of plating Cartwright at No.5 - a batsman he is most certainly not.
You cannot expect any return in this competition playing with only 4 specialist batsmen.

We have been expecting to win white ball comps with three maybe four one day batters for years BBTC.

Our last decent one day batting side included Desmond Haynes. He left 24 years ago.

An enjoyable day watching the local bird of prey population - at one point there were three buzzards soaring behind the Salter's Field end and a red kite (or maybe more than one) put in a couple of appearances - spoiled only by the team's performance.

Hoping for more of the same tomorrow plus a better performance from the team.
