Somerset 133/3 after 25 overs.
Trego getting his usual runs against us, 53 not out.
Third wicket was a Sowter run out off Franklins bowling.

After a couple of promising games its looks as if Normal Service is resumed.
Bit embarrassing really.
Looking on the brighter side we should be getting Dawid Malan back.

53 run defeat.
Simmo with a knock of 77 made it a bit more respectable, Ravi with 24 at the end.

Hampshire lost as well, they threw it away.

The group now the very close. Our late cameo good for our goal difference.

Think Mala will survive any changes for Headingley but feel sure we'll lose Gubbo, so a place for Holden.
Still not enough runs from Cartwright but bringing in Harris really lengthens the an already long tail. The spinners are doing a good job so it's quite a selection conundrum.

Picking Nick Gubbins who has played less than 40 list 'A' games for a demoralised England team would be an act of desperation on behalf of England and a bad move for Middlesex.
He has only played 3 innings in the second tier of English cricket this summer and I fear he would go the same way as Sam Robson who was discarded by England when the opposition found his weakness outside the off stump - Sam was then returned to Middlesex where the counties knew of his weakness and played on it.
End result is a player who lacks confidence and cannot score any runs with an average of 13.75 in the second tier of English cricket this summer.

What has the number of List A matches that Nick Gubbins has played got to do with his suitability for Test cricket?

If he were to be selected, it would surely be more down to the runs he made in Div 1 in the last couple of years than to three matches in Div 2.

The third of Bring Back the Crusaders' points, that it might reveal a weakness and spoil his county form, has a bit more weight (though IIRC Sam Robson's form was pretty good until the middle of the 2017 season, well after he had been discarded) but if you never pick someone you'll never know.

Don't forget Gubbo also made two hundreds in the preseason North v South clash, which is meant to be the best english cricketers not involved in international cricket (so ought to be considered at least the equal of Division one cricket).

I personally think picking any debutante for what is a 'must win' test match against Pakistan for the current England set up is doomed to fail.
Its not that I'm against Nick Gubbins playing for England its that I don't think the circumstances at present will further his career - there are to many young players in County Cricket discarded by England struggling to pick up the pieces.
If however the selectors were to guarantee him selection for the series against India without the pressure of having to be a 'one test wonder' I would certainly be very happy both for him and Middlesex.

I thought the ecb said fixtures are being set to make travel easier for players.....why,then,did the 3 one day away games be held at Cardiff,Hove and Taunton?
Surely, the Hove and Taunton games should of been reversed?
Drive from Cardiff, past the M5 junction for Taunton all the way to Hove, then return on M4 towards Cardiff and take M5 junction to Taunton?
Something just doesn't seem right here!!

Thanks to the posters who put Pete Trego's arrival at and departure from Middlesex in their true and fair context.

Peter Trego spent the later stage of the 2005 season with us before rejoining Somerset for the 2006 season. It was a long time ago but he did his best for us before returning home to Weston-super-Mare.

The scheduling may be demanding for one's travelling plans. One of the challenges is to overcome the pressures involved.

With regard to the National Selection policy, I am sure that Gubbins's opportunity will arrive but why the rush?

It is encouraging to see Simpson back amongst the runs and Finn starting to take wickets.

Perhaps he did so well because he was on the same side as Dominic Bess!!

As it has panned out Keaton Jennings has got the nod to replace Stoneman.

So we keep Gubbo. Should Jennings make a fist of it, then one assumes Gubbo will remain with the Middle for the forseeable.

Ed Smith, given the situation, thought it better to use someone with some Test experience rather than throw another rookie to the lions.

Whatever England position you look at: alternatives are not plentiful.

Michael Vaughan suggests leave out Broad or Anderson. Not sure I read who his alternative would be though.
