Harry Podmore interview-

Most telling comment- 'If there's no competition, people get comfortable, and start slacking'.

But the thing is Podmore wasn't prepared to compete - he wanted guaranteed first team cricket and left when he didn't get it

I reckon both Harry and Ryan must be relieved to be away from this mess.

Was he really guaranteed first team cricket when he left? He clearly thought he had a better chance of selection there and maybe he was offered a better or longer contract. Perfectly sensible and no basis on which to impute a lack of willingness to compete when here.

Higgins did want guaranteed selection (as did Sibley leaving Surrey). I don't think it is right to attract players with promises that shouldn't be kept if the player loses form. Higgins would surely have been selected this year and would have provided better balance than Mr Cartwright but he had agreed to go before relegation came. Like others, though, I do wonder if there was some form of bust up which soured the whole atmosphere, and perhaps continues to do so.

Poddy's comment was in relation to his time with Kent, rather than us- as in, he knows he has to perform, because there are people equally good in the wings, if his intensity, and performance dips.

At Middlesex he never had the luxury of an unbroken championship run to show us what he could do, as he was always considered to be the last cab off the rank. So, he didn't 'fail' with us, he never got the chance, and couldn't see any realistic prospect of the situation ever changing.

With two 37ish players Murts, still performing, and Franklin, Rojo out, unfortunate, Finny carrying a knock, Helm carried off by the ECB - not much sign of forward thinking there in letting players go.

Was Podmore given much encouragement or Higgo? The spin department for spinners for the past decade has looked like Colditz Castle.

The slide started last year with the failure to enforce the follow on, or maybe declare, reducing the time available to beat Essex. Essex members were flabbergasted at those tactical errors. Eleven points chucked out of the window.

We at the time were alleged to be playing 'hard cricket'.

Went on Wednesday to Canters. Nice train ride from St Pancras. Twenty quid to get in. No moans there as expected it to be over in two sessions.

Wildly optimistic. One session of one hour and fifty five minutes. Lets say no one essayed permanence.

Just had time to finish the pork roast, good value at ten quid before Murts lost a stump.

Junctions 10 to 13 on M25 closed, so had to reroute through Mexico.

£20 to get in. Little consistency then with Leicester only charging £12.Were they charging extra to pay for floodlights? I thought day /night matches were to attract extra spectators, so price hike seems odd.

I feel sorry for Sam Robson, as he must feel very frustrated with this season. I am sure that no-one will be more disappointed than he is about the fact that none of his 12 County Championship innings have seen him pass 36. Also, I imagine that it makes things harder for him that the middle period of the Championship is stop-start, as it means he can’t play himself into any rhythm. Our first five matches took place across five weeks, before our campaign paused for the Royal London Cup and resumed five weeks later for our back-to-back matches v Leicestershire and Kent. Our next Championship match v Warwickshire at Lord’s is not for another three weeks, then it will be another three weeks for our match after that, at which point we can finally concentrate on our final six Championship matches.

So why not play Sam in at least a couple of the 50 over matches? OK they say he is not a one day player but he could hardly have done much worse than some of the others.

That might not be such a bad idea. Hit yourself in to form, because you have to get on with it, and no time to dwell on if you are technically doing this or that right.

Can't see it happening though.
