I would imagine it is because his first name is Abraham, so I suppose if you shortened it to a more informal user friendly version it would become Abie' or just 'AB'.

According to what was stated at The Stuart Law Q and A. An attempt to sign AB was made last year.

As regards red ball. It was also stated that it was unlikely to happen. An overseas player that is.

Reason. Availability for a couple of games and then disappear for three months, not great for dressing room harmony, plus blocks MX young player development.

It does suggest we're not trying too hard to get one. It has the incidental advantage of saving cash, perhaps enabling us to sign AB for the T20?

Hilton Cartwright is probably available.

Surrey apparently tried to get AB, so I think we should declare that AB is true MTWD material.

The thought that has just occurred to me (for 2020 on) is that if the club were to be looking for a player around most of the time whose presence would not disrupt the team, the ideal candidate would be ... Paul Stirling!

An article in The Times sandpaper newspaper says that the representatives of Steve Smith have spoken to several counties about the possibility of him playing County Championship cricket before the Ashes. The article (well, the part of the article non-subscribers are allowed to read before the text disappears behind a paywall) names Middlesex as one of the counties who have a vacancy for an overseas player, and although the article doesn’t explicitly say that his representatives have spoken to us, I would have thought that they would have identified us as a potential destination considering we play at Lord’s and have an Australian coach.

I sincerely hope we are not connected with this cheat,as I,for 1,would not welcome him into our great club.
If,and,of course it's a big IF,we did sign him,I wouldn't applaud any runs he makes or catches taken either.I just don't like the idea on bit.
To be honest, why any county keeps bringing in test players,or any player, before a test series on our shores is still beyond me.
This practice should be stopped, giving opponents the chance to acclimatise before an Ashes series,or any test series.

RANT OVER!

I whole heartedly agree with Beefy on moral grounds.....however, in cricketing terms would love to have Smith. I am sure a county will take the plunge, be it Middlesex or A.N. Other.

I am disappointed that Durham have appointed Cameron Bancroft as captain. I accept that he was the junior partner and fall guy in Sandpapergate but that seems to show that he did not have the cojones to stand up to the pressure to cheat.

Which makes a farce of Durham's contention:-

"He's proven since returning to first-class cricket over the last few months that he has the mental toughness, skill and attitude to excel at the highest level."

Skill and attitude maybe. Mental toughness? If he had enough of that he would never have participated unless he thought deep down that cheating was OK. So he is either inherently a cheat or he does not have the mental toughness that a captain requires.
