An interesting and, in my view, sensible intervention from John Emburey on spinners and spinning pitches:

In my view many of the wickets to fall to Jack Leach and Dom Bess were due to opposition batsmen trying to play them whilst rooted to the crease when some foot movement would have left them much more in control of the stroke. Also when in defensive mode right handers playing at Jack Leach when he had clearly pitched outside off stump and edging a ball they had absolutely no need to play. Two of the three Middlesex wickets to fall on the third evening of the last match as far as i can recall went that way. I can still see Trott in another match probably in 2016 reaching so far forward to defend whilst trying to keep his back foot anchored in the crease that it was physically impossible for him to keep his heel down and being stumped.

There is a longer article on Cricinfo which also contains Emburey's comments about Somerset:

Whilst I fully support Lee Cooper's line on pitches this year because of the fear of points deductions I do think he should be pushing the Emburey line with the ECB.

I feel very sorry for the Somerset batsmen if the Taunton pitches continue to be friendly to spinners. They will have to bat on them seven times more than any visiting side!

It was the pitch inspector's view as well on the two times they visited the press box to talk about their views.

On both occasions both inspectors said the fall of wickets had far more to do with batsmen not playing spin sensibly rather than the pitch giving a spinner an unfair advantage.

I certainly take the second point that going for shots you really had no need to play because you either have no idea where your stump is or you think the ball is so slow it will be easy to hit. Batsmen getting out to injudicious shot selection can't then blame it on the type of bowler they are facing. Also while they do it the bowler if he has any sense will hang the ball out there and let them slash at it.

Ireland will take on Somerset in a four-day encounter at Taunton as preparation for their first men's Test match in May against Pakistan.

The game against the county side on 6-9 April will see Irish left-arm spinner George Dockrell returning to the County Ground, where he spent five seasons.

Excellent. Though it might be a bit brisk that early in April. It possibly explains why there was that gap in the friendlies if this was on the cards.

Fantastic news. A proper, four-day match, against proper opposition.

Not sure how much good it will do the Irish lads, over a month before the actual Test, but that's their problem, not ours.

I'm just grateful that at last our first XI won't start playing the County Championship from a standing start.

Nope. Another interesting piece on the official site. For those of you who may have wondered who Adam Dibble was, a little bit on what he is doing now.

I didn't realise how much injury had blighted his career and how little he played in the 7 odd years he was on the books.

Excellent news.Might still need the thermals but a decent test against a test side,is just what is required

Talking of Ireland, is our former Head Groundsman Phil Frost still Head Groundsman at Malahide, where Ireland play their first ever Test?

My copy of the Almanac arrived today and promises to be as interesting as ever. There is a very candid final report from Chairman Nash and I am impressed that he takes responsibility, along with other senior officials, for the departure of Hose - and exonerates Maynard.

There are alway going to be errors in a document of this kind and I note that Byrom has been credited with Bartlett's batting figures.

Until we see what happens this year i have to say I'm not sure the Hose issue was an error on our part or a move by the player that made sense given where he fits into a county setup.

He has yet to consolidate his position anywhere and it will probably be short format. I think he will but until he does.......

It's on another thread somewhere Mike. Pre Test friendly in early April.

Can we sign Colin de Grandhomme for short format cricket please. Just watched him absolutely murder Pakistan in the 4th ODI. Big and massively powerful. A ball he makes contact with definitely is aware that it has been hit.

I, too, am pleased that Mr Hurry has made the effort to try to find some credible pre-season opposition rather than the usual menu of CC2 opponents.

It doesn't appear as though there will be any additions to our bowling ranks.

In which case, does anybody have any intelligence on the latest regarding our various injury question-marks in the pace department (which apply to everybody bar Tim G and Josh Davey, so far as I'm aware)?

Re: 2018 SOMERSET RELATED NEWS
Grockle 17 January, 2018 11:42
Just relaying what I read Scrumper - not sure he'd be my choice. I watched this mountain of a batsman from NZ called Colin de Goodhomme (?) last night destroy the Pakistani bowling attack. I'd have someone like him. Though Johann Myburgh was in that kind of form last year.

Sam Northeast has been replaced as Kent captain and Cricinfo seem confident that he will be using the exit. Nottinghamshire or Hampshire are suggested as likely "bidders", but no mention of Somerset.
I just wonder why not us, Andy Hurry or Jason Kerr not think we need additional batsmen, he fits the brief or perhaps lack of finance?

Re: 2018 SOMERSET RELATED NEWS
chunkyinargyll 17 January, 2018 12:43
A month ago I was hearing 'Notts or Somerset'.

Signing Northeast wouldn't block the youngsters, as this must surely be Trescothick's last year.

You've got to get in quick when you hear a good player is looking for a move.

He's been given permission to talk to other counties. Where would he go in our setup?

Interesting to see what the bosses say at the AGM next Monday.

You may think it is the last one Chunky... but it has been said before. The youngsters are already there one has to say. Bartlett, Banton, Trenouth with Byrom already looking to be in.

I'm not sure where he fits or, to be honest, personally particularly impressed by him.

I think he is aptly named Grandhomme, while our Myburg could be described as Petithomme.

I note that Number Plate Recognition is being installed in the Car Park at the County Ground,
similar to that in use in Morrison's.

Should put a stop to those drivers who park in the ground and not pay when no
attendant on duty.
Its been a grey area for years, as those abusing the facilities were only give a gentle reminder or a notice put on the car screen if they were found out.

Roger, I heard this a few weeks ago and been trying to work out how it would work.

With the supermarkets cameras you get a period of time free and get sent a bill if you stay over that free time.

I can't see SCCC giving free parking for cars for any length of time (I could be wrong) if not, how will the cameras know when you have paid? Unless you have to enter your registration when getting a parking ticket.

Any idea how it could work?

Unfortunately, car park camera's now seem to be horribly efficient.

After returning to Canada last summer, I received a parking fine from a Car Park in Scarborough, where I parked for a few hours whilst watching day 1 at North Marine Road.

Not only did the ticket show the precise time I entered the park & fed money into the machine, but it graciously enclosed a photo of my rental car still parked there 15 minutes after expiry of the allocated time.

To add insult to injury, the 50 quid ticket was complemented by a further 40 quid administration fee from the car rental firm !

Expensive day. Lesson learned.

Outside of Ben Stokes I can't think of a more valuable T20 player in the world than Andre Russell. An explosive batsman - if he came in with 12 to win off two balls, you'd honestly expect him to get them. Also a genuinely fast bowler with a variety of slower balls, and simply the only rival to de Villiers as the best outfielder in the world. Some of the stuff on YouTube has to be seen to be believed, e.g. [www.youtube.com]

If we really have got him, I'd buy a T20 season ticket for the first time for years. (If we haven't, I wouldn't.)

Northeast, on the other hand, should indeed go to Surrey. An inconsistent batsman whose captaincy has failed to get his team out of Division 2, he's then gone and walked out on them on account of being clearly much too good for Division 2 himself. He'd fit in well at the Oval.
