Durham gets Ashes Test Match

Durham's Riverside ground will host an Ashes Test Match in 2013 following an announcement from the ECB today. The decision, while a huge boost to cricket at the Riverside, will be seen by many as coming one tour too late after the surprise inclusion of Cardiff for this year's opening Ashes test.

In addition to the Ashes test in 2013, Durham will also host Sri Lanka for a test match in 2016. A big departure from the 'minnows' tag of the previous test matches against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and the West Indies.

The full hosting plan is yet to be finalised with the Brit Oval the only other ground to be announced for the 2013 Ashes.

"It has also been a goal to bring an Ashes Test match to the region and we're delighted that North-East sports fans will have the opportunity to watch the ultimate clash between England and Australia on their doorstep," said David Harker, Durham's chief executive.

Durham's chairman, Clive Leach, said: "There has been a great deal of work behind the scenes to ensure that Riverside continues to develop in order to maintain its position as a leading international cricket venue. For an Ashes Test match to be played at the Riverside will be a huge milestone for Durham County Cricket Club and this achievement is testament to the hard work of all involved."

Durham will host one day internationals in 2010 and 2011 and the final of the Twenty20 domestic competition in 2011 and 2015.

England v Pakistan (2 T20s)

2011

India Tests: Edgbaston, Lord's, The Brit Oval, Trent Bridge

Domestic T20 final: Durham

To allocate: T20 v Sri Lanka; T20 v India

2012

West Indies Tests: Edgbaston, Trent Bridge

West Indies ODIs: Cardiff, Headingley Carnegie, The Brit Oval

South Africa Tests: Headingley Carnegie, The Brit Oval

South Africa ODIs: Cardiff, Rose Bowl, Trent Bridge

Great news for Durham. Got to be an argument for it being the first test as England have won every test they've played at the Riverside :-)

Only trouble with playing the first test Jon is that it may still be cold up here. Best to have one around July or August when the tempertatures are huigher, although we can't guarantee it will stay dry.

The program for 2013 shows NewZealand Tests and ODI's before the Ashes series so presumably our Test will be late June or early July!

No doubt it will be over £100 a ticket by then. Still, it will be worth it. Another major goal achieved in the short history of our first class lives.

Very true Stuart. Next year we have a ODI when England host Pakistan. The tests for Australia v Pakistan are as yet unallocated so we may have a chance of one of those. Finally it looks like The Riverside is to become a proper international venue, hosting the big name opponents and at the right time of the year.

I suspect one of the Australia vs Pakistan tests will go to Headingley with the large Asian community nearby...

There are still other England ODI and Tests to be decided...

This is great news, one person has had something negative to say...Bob Willis! According to Bob test matches should only be played at the biggest-in terms of seating capacity-grounds. It's not like him to be negative :-)

The Riverside will have a capacity of 20000 by then, not exactly small...

Sophia Gardens has 15000

Old Trafford claim that their capacity will be 15000 increasing to 25,000 ( with temp seating) by 2012.

TB's planned development will take them to over 17,000

The Rosebowl claim 20000 capacity rising to 25,000 after their £48 million development ( 15000 permanent seats of which 6000 are under cover)

So there you go even if all the other grounds go ahead with the upgrades the Riverside will still be in the top half dozen in terms of size and with 5 tests it's fair enough.
