Shikhar Dhawan was picked to replace Murali Vijay who apparently is still not fully recovered from a wrist injury for India's tour of Sri Lanka.
In the context of this tour to Sri Lanka and Dhawan's great form in the ICC Champions Trophy in England, and also keeping in mind that India and Sri Lanka are so close geographically it is understandable that the selectors opted for Dhawan. But one must say that Parthiv Patel with his excellent show as make-shift Test opener in the last home season and utility as back up keeper should be kept in mind, especially when touring in places like Australia, South Africa or England....
Vijay, who had suffered a wrist injury during Australia’s tour of India, has complained of pain in his right wrist, while playing a preparatory match. The BCCI medical team has therefore advised that Vijay should continue his rehabilitation program.
The team is as follows:
Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice captain), Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, R Jadeja, W Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, M Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Abhinav Mukund.
