Xmas Picture Quiz Results

2 Got him
By Barmy Kev
January 6 2012
Here are the much awaited answers and result from the Xmas picture competion. We have a tie breaker question too due to a thrilling draw.
The answers are:

Picture 1: Nigel Ross
Picture 2: Mike Selvey
Picture 3: Vintcent van der Bijl
Picture 4: John Price
Picture 5: Scott Styris
Picture 6: Dion Nash
Picture 7: John Carr
Picture 8: Keith Dutch
Picture 9: Graham Rose
Picture 10: Ian Gould

Picture 11: Boyd Rankin
Picture 12: Chris Peploe
Picture 13: Chris Whelan
Picture 14: Sven Koenig
Picture 15: Danny Evans
Picture 16: Josh Davey
Picture 17: Melvyn Betts
Picture 18: Neil Carter
Picture 19: Paul Hutchison
Picture 20: Yogesh Golwalker

Picture 21: Steve Nikitaras
Picture 22: Norman Featherstone
Picture 23: Larry Gomes
Picture 24: Ashley Noffke
Picture 25: Neil Williams
Picture 26: Paul Farbrace
Picture 27: Colin Metson
Picture 28: Simon Hughes
Picture 29: Tim Lamb
Picture 30: Mike Smith

Well done to Rod/Ed and Chunkyinargyll for their entries from Scotland.  They had some good answers but struggled on the more recent players ( apart from Josh Davey ) no doubt due to their location making it difficult to see matches.

Congratulation to Jonathan Winsky and Darren Gosling who both incredibly got full marks.

I have set a weekend tie breaker with 3 of what I think are difficult ones.  If they cannot be separated by these I will have to fork out with 2 miniscule prizes.

The tie break answers are Mali Richards, Nigel Felton and Peter Wellings.

I mistakenly thought Nigel Felton played for Middle, got him confused with Mark Feltham.

Undeterred Jonathan Winsky got all 3. Darren managed 2. A minscule prize on its way to JW and I may offer Darren a mini miniscule prize for his gallant efforts.

Well done to both of you.

Congrats JW - but just how on earth did you get a correct answer to an incorrect question, I'm absolutely baffled?

I thought No 2 was from Crimewatch, to be honest.

Very well done, Jonathan. I suppose you factored in that Kev only gets 10% so the prospect of all three questions being correct was, er, minuscule.

BTW, what;s the difference between Barmy Kev (as in the byline) and Barmier Kev?

It was my cock up. I did alert JW that no. 2 was not a Middlesex player. As stated a miniscule prize will be on its way to Darren for his excellent effort too.

I used to be BarmyKev but due to techie problems had to change it. At time it was apt to change it to BarmierKev.

One is even barmier than the other.

I too would love to know how Jonathan 'recognised' a non Middle player, as well as someone as obscure as Nigel Ross, a second team keeper who played a handful of times for the club about 35-40 years ago.

Is there some way of 'googling' images of past Middle players? Alot of them were before you were born JW.
I played fair, hence didn't do so well!

Well done anyway!

Edit-I typed this whilst Kev had made above post (about giving JW a tip-off)

I guess Lower Mound may have helped which is fine by me. I really did not expect anyone to get them all. If I was to do another quiz like this, I am not sure what level to pitch it at as a lot struggled , yet had 2 full houses.

I found the answers to a lot of the photos which had originally appeared on Cricinfo by clicking on "View a Printer Friendly version of this Story", right-clicking on the image to find information on the photo, typing one of the numbers which appears in the URL into Google and adding "site:espncricinfo" on to the end of that search, all of which I know sounds complicated! Right-clicking on photo 1 and copying the URL leads to a URL of www.espncricinfo.com/inline/content/image/236488.html?alt=1, while clicking on "open image" or "view image" (depending on the browser used) leads to a URL of static.cricinfo.com/db/PICTURES/CMS/58900/58957.1.jpg. Performing searches such as "236488 site:espncricinfo.com" or 58957 site:espncricinfo.com" all lead to images of Nigel Ross, so clearly that was the correct answer. I did the same process for the other Cricinfo photos.

For the photos which had previously appeared on MTWD, I found a lot of them either on a gallery of our squad from 2005 or by Googling part of the URL, like I did for the Cricinfo photos.

I was either certain or fairly sure that I knew what Mike Selvey, Vintcent van der Bijl, Scott Styris, John Carr, Keith Dutch, Ian Gould, Danny Evans, Josh Davey, Steve Nikitaris and Simon Hughes looked like.

Of the photos which did not originate from Cricinfo or MTWD and of people I didn't already know, I identifed the photo of Dion Nash when I found a player matching his description in the 1995/96 Annual Review and I somehow stumbled upon the photo of Larry Gomes while confirming whether a previous answer would be correct (I forgot which one).

While searching for the answer to the photo of Nigel Felton, I discovered that by visiting images.google.co.uk, clicking on the photo of the camera and pasting the URL, I could find a website where the photo had previously appeared, and that website could then tell me who the photo was of. Pasting the URL of Felton's photo lead me a page on Northamptonshire's website which said the photo was of Felton. I went through the same process for the final picture and was directed to Peter Wellings' Cricinfo page. Had I discovered that process earlier, then I wouldn't have struggled with the photos of Nash and Gomes!

The reason why I did not submit my answers until as late as possible was to make it look like I found it difficult, as it would have looked arrogant to submit my answers shortly after the questions were set.

Lower Mound did not help me with any of the photos.

The reason why I did a picture quiz as I thought the answers would be based on cricket knowledge. I believe Darren managed this. Credit to Jonathan for finding a way round this, but I can now safely say this will be first and last quiz of this nature.

I do have another idea for next year.

I think it may be Jonathan's desire - some may say obsessive nature - to find the correct answer to questions, that have caused him problems, rather than a wish to break any rules.
JC had all 30 in 10 minutes, but then he has more time on his hands than most!

Good old google etc, no real brain required just a knowledge of how to hack round various websites.

To those who took part "unassisted" well done, to those like myself who didn't bother entering knowing there would be at least one person who would max mark the thing I hope you were able to spot one or two characters from your past rather than a pc's memory.

Nice idea Kev and will have provided a good few with a lot of fun but always open to abuse I'm afraid.

ICC announce anti-corruption probe - into MTWD xmas picture competition!

Word of advice JW. Like the Major in Who Wants to be a Millionaire? quit before the million pound question, otherwise others are likely to get suspicious!

Credit JW where it's due though Chunky, at least he "fessed up" to how he got the answers...... even the "wrong one".

Our church magazine has run a quiz in the Christmas edition for many years and the same person always seems to win it, he has no job and is at home all day with pc access. Just seems rather sad that people see the need to search the web for answers to a quiz. The internet is a wonderful thing but it has killed these sort of competitions stone dead.

I don't think I cheated. I see it more like finding that a door was ajar, so I walked in. Hopefully the ICC or legal system will not punish me.

The term usually used in sport when someone wants to make use of every opportunity and gets down when that doesn't happen is "churlish". Examples of that is a cricket team being unhappy with a five-wicket win when they could win by seven wickets, or a football team being unhappy with a 4-1 win when they could have scored a couple more or not conceded a goal.

I have a churlish attitude when I am taking an exam at college or participating in a quiz, as I know that making any mistakes could be costly to my chances of passing the exam or winning the quiz. Although I need to achieve 70% of the possible marks in both sections whenever I take exams, I feel reluctant to feel anything other than down if I fear that I may have made a mistake or been unable to answer a question correctly. The attitude seems to work, as I have been marked as competent in every exam I have taken, whereas some people have not passed exams as a result of making silly mistakes or not checking their answers.

On a similar note, when I watch cricket, I don't like to see my team or a team I am cheering on score fewer runs, take fewer wickets, concede more runs or lose more wickets than they should for fear that it could become costly in a close match, and when I watch football, I don't like to see my team or a team I am cheering on win by a smaller margin than they could or lose by a bigger margin than they should for fear that it could become costly when goal difference is taken into account (if a team is 3-0 up going into the final minutes, they should look to extend their lead and/or not see their lead reduced, and if a team is 3-0 down going into the final minutes, they should look to reduce their deficit and/or not see their deficit increased). Those are the complicated ideals that I live by!

When Australia were 21-9 v South Africa at Cape Town in November and there was a possibility of them coming top of the table of lowest Test totals ever, I was very upset when they recovered to 47 to finish a measly joint-15th in the table.

Sri Lanka are currently 13-5 after 7.4 overs chasing a target of 302 v South Africa at Paarl, so my churlishness means I would be unhappy if this does not result in the opportuntity being taken for the occasion to register high in the list of Largest margin of victory (by wickets), Lowest innings totals or Shortest completed innings (by balls).

To find a photo of a certain player, you just need to type the player's name into Google Images.

Despite have a reluctance to make mistakes, I have noticed that nearly every post I have made over the last couple of days has included some mistake or another. Indeed, I have noticed that I made a mistake in my previous post on this thread, as I should have linked to the record for Largest margin of victory (by runs) rather than wickets.

Sri Lanka are currently 33-8 after 15.2 overs, so have scored more runs and lasted more balls for my liking.

Vic. Open up the Google Images link provided by Johnathan. Then just type the name of the player and hey presto.

well yes, if you type in Nigel Ross, it will bring up photos of Nigel Ross. What me and Vic don't understand is, how do you hover over the photo of a face you don't recognise, and get the answer. JW clearly regards this as showing initiative, but if we all knew how to do it everyone would get 33 out of 33.
I do hope the prize is really miniscule!!

Thanks Kev, I did get how to do it, just that my subject doesn't have any usable pictures really, although there are some very good ones of a jockey with the same name :-)
