Scoreboard doesn't lie

By Peter Speroni
July 30 2017

Peter Speroni one of my walking football and cricket pals gives his perspective of his recent visit to Lord's for 20/20 cricket. This gives a perspective on why there are empty seats for the form most of us here enjoy and packed houses for the much shorter form.

I visited Lord's for the third time in my life (I'm now 68) on Thursday evening to watch the 20/20 playing Essex. This was also the third time I've been to spectate a cricket match. The first was in the 80's (I think) to see England take on the Windies. After a slow morning when the Caribbean bowlers started their run up almost from the boundary and a time when scoring 220 in a day was average.  Rain stopped play that day I believe.

My next visit was very recent, only week's ago, to watch the Middle's game against Surrey.  I was in good company. Just as well as it was the third day and the result was obviously heading for a draw, not helped apparently by a change in the scoring system.  In truth the action on the playing surface didn't register very highly on the entertainment scale.

By contrast to the first two games the third game had far more going for it. It was almost a full house and the game starting at a cracking pace for the home side, and between balls there was much else happening. Just looking around people watching the young professional city people coming straight from work in their smart suits and dresses, people meeting each other, families and fathers bringing their young children and the constant murmur from the crowd. It was an experience and an enjoyable one for me.

I appreciate this form of cricket isn't necessarily for the purists but, with crowds such as they were and the associated money into the game, there is obviously a place for it and, for those who aren't purists, importantly it is fun and entertaining and getting youngsters, future generations interested in the sport ensuring cricket will have a future.
