Mala 160 not out

QPR Chris reports from day 4 at Northampton with some words of caution about our next game.

A superb unbeaten 160 from captain Dawid Malan saw Middlesex achieve what was in the end a comfortable draw at Wantage Road, as we took nine points back to London. After a hugely disappointing first two days, the rearguard action with the bat that followed showed a steeliness that was characteristic of a number of our performances in the back end of the 2018 season. However, the test of improvement in this campaign will be in setting up victory chances from the start, rather than clawing our way from a long way behind.

On the final day at Northampton, Malan made the most of being dropped by a diving gully to play an impressive and otherwise assured innings. The skipper demonstrated excellent judgement to bat the visitors to a draw that had looked a long way off at the mid-point of the match. Ably supported by Max Holden - who was unfortunate to see his crunching pull stroke rebound off the silly mid-off fielder to be caught by wicketkeeper Rossington in mid-afternoon - and then in an unbroken stand with the untroubled Eoin Morgan, Malan’s anchor role enabled Middlesex to gain a degree of control by the final session.

Earlier, there were some nerves when Sam Robson got a lifter in the morning to be held at slip with Middlesex still 55 runs behind. Sensibly, there was steady accumulation by Malan and Holden as safety came first before the two freed the shackles somewhat after lunch, including one maximum by Malan into the sparsely populated members’ area.

With the draw guaranteed in the final session, we took the opportunity to race through some overs with the ball to recover an over-rate deficit from the first innings. It seems the authorities have tightened the rules on this in 2019 - something to be mindful of as the season progresses.

So, improvement and greater consistency needed as we move to Lords for the visit of a Lancashire side with Anderson and Onions likely to feature. Time to start batting with more application in the first innings.

Good write up. At the start only two outcomes possible. So well done Mx.
