ICL Makes Cricket History In India
By Gaurang
November 29 2007
The Indian Cricket League (ICL), brain child of Subhash Chandra of Zee Television, and the product of the combined vision of Kapil Dev, Dean Jones, Kiran More and Tony Greig, the executive board of the nascent League will make its debut with a game between the Delhi Jets and the Chandigarh Lions at the newly updated Panchkula stadium.

The challenges the ICL faces are daunting.  By announcing its intentions early the ICL gave the BCCI lots of time to react, and react they did.  The BCCI was stung into action with this challenge to its monopolistic grip over Indian cricket and quickly started throwing one road block after another trying to stymie the ICL.

So far the BCCI has instructed all its member bodies, i.e. domestic first class teams, to blacklist any youngster who dares to join ICL and prevent him from ever playing for his domestic team, and therefore for India as well, basically destroying their official careers.

Next, it threatened to cut off the pension benefits of all ex-cricketers who had the temerity to join the ICL in whatever capacity, coach, mentor, talent scout, match official, etc.   The BCCI also instructed all member bodies to refuse to allow the ICL to use any of the established cricket stadiums, at the risk of being blacklisted for future ODIs and Test matches, if they failed to comply.  But these moves simply were a stop-gap.

The biggest threat the BCCI faced was to their revenue stream from television rights of matches they organized.   After dragging its feet on the whole idea of Twenty20 cricket, where it even threatened not to send a team to the ICC’s inaugural Twenty20 World Cup, haughtily saying that India didn’t need Twenty20, as stadiums were packed even for regular fifty over one-day matches, the BCCI finally sent a team minus its big names to the tournament.  India unexpectedly ended up winning the tournament, and sensing a huge opportunity to turn the tables on the ICL, the BCCI hastily organized a ticker-tape parade in pouring rain to squeeze maximum mileage from the surprise bonanza.

Meanwhile BCCI also announced the formation of a copy-cat league named the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the added twist that the teams in this league would be franchises owned by private entities (either business groups or even individuals).  Predictably the Babus at BCCI who have about as much expertise in running things in a business or professional manner, as they have of actually having played the game they control, i.e. absolutely zero, then hired a Western consultant to fly in and provide a ready made package for the creation of the IPL.  The player contracts generated by the Western consultants have been trashed by several sources, including Daniel Vettorri, the New Zealand captain, as the worst professional contracts he’s ever encountered.

The BCCI has also put immense pressure on other national cricket bodies to prevent their players from joining the ICL and asked them to ban any player who did so.  So far the other Asian boards, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have followed the BCCI diktat.  South Africa also seems to be cracking down on players who join the ICL.  As for the the other boards, Australia, England, New Zealand, West Indies, who coincidentally have the strongest Players Unions, have not agreed to the BCCI’s request to ban players.  In the case of the West Indies, it would have been particularly hard for them to do so, as they have agreed to allow another private individual, Alan Stanford a billionaire from the United States, to bankroll the board, on condition that it recognizes his private Twenty20 tournament, which they were only too glad to do.

Finally, the BCCI has gone about signing up International “Stars” for the IPL itself, poor contracts and all. It has done so despite not yet having announced any plans for who will own the “franchises” or how the players signed up by BCCI will fit into that scheme of things.  Their only motive it seems is to throw money at “Stars” so as to keep them away from ICL.

The latest and most underhanded move that the BCCI has made, is to announce that it is willing to sign up any “International” player, but not any “Indian” player, who signed up with ICL but wants to switch to IPL.  Apparently the Babus in BCCI have never heard of the concept of honoring a contract, or of the tort of interference with a contract, which their announcement clearly is.  If the ICL were to seek damages from the BCCI in a court of law, they would certainly have a very good case.

Additionally the IPL’s motives are very clear, they are not interested in promoting young Indian cricketers at all as the only Indian players signed up by the IPL are Anil Kumble, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.  Players who are all on the wrong side of 30 and some nearing 40.  Not a single Indian youngster has been signed up.

Despite these huge obstacles thrown in its path by the BCCI, the ICL has steadfastly withstood them and gone about its business.  It has brought in a lot of professionalism in the way it has organized its cricket tournament.  Despite being refused stadiums to play matches in, ICL has managed to lease a stadium in Panchkula and transformed a smallish stadium with minimal facilities to a near international quality stadium with a pavilion, media center, flood lights, locker-room facilities, etc.  The ICL has also roped in a lot of big names in Indian cricket, sincere characters who were not allowed to contribute to Indian cricket because they didn’t play the political games necessary to work for the BCCI, including Ajit Wadekar, Erappalli Prasanna, Sandip Patil, Madan Lal, Balwinder Sandhu, etc. to work in various capacities for ICL.

For the average Indian cricket fan there are so many reasons to support the ICL instead of the BCCI, including the classic rooting for the underdog and rooting against the “Evil Empire” that is embodied by the monopolistic, hide-bound BCCI which has stunted the growth of Indian cricket with its semi-feudal modus operandi for over seven decades.  Of course the odds are stacked heavily against the ICL, with BCCI doing its level best to undermine it at every step.

It is a minor miracle that its tournament has even seen the light of day.  But by coming this far, the ICL has thrown down the gauntlet and now is ready to take on the BCCI at its own game.  Zee Television through its vast network of channels is about to insure that the first ICL tournament is viewed on as many as 25 channels in India and overseas.  BCCI must be hoping that the second Test at Kolkata provides a few thrills otherwise there could be huge number of TV sets switching from that to the brash new Twenty20 tournament.

I hope they can stand out by offering something different and unique - that makes people sit up and take notice. They need to go beyond ICC-rules cricket.

I wrote to them suggesting that they adopt 2 appeals to 3rd Umpire per innings...

The other suggestion I had was to allow unlimited substitution a la baseball... i.e. they can use the full bench...

Why should a FULL team not be used... heck I would even allow substitution in the middle of an innings by a player...if he is playing too slow or is a detriment to his side...smiling smiley

Good to see some innovations being brought in by ICL..

Here is a preview from CI...

Stage set for ICL kick off

"Twenty four runs in one ball. Jujubi (too easy)," screams a look-alike of Tamil actor Rajinikanth from a poster outside the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula. Around 200 eager spectators hover around the periphery of the ground trying to figure out what the spectacle is. Organisers fume over last-minute preparations, emcees fret over logistics, and the players kick up gusts of dusts practising their direct hits. The Indian Cricket League is finally here.

"We've had so many spanners thrown into the works that we can't believe we've finally got so far," says one of the organisers, heaving a sigh of relief. Everyone hopes the opening game of the tournament, Chandigarh Lions (with Chris Cairns, Andrew Hall, Daryl Tuffey, Imran Farhat in their line-up) taking on the Delhi Jets (with Taufeeq Umar, Paul Nixon in the side), attracts a good response but nobody is going to complain if it's Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor's dance show that's whetting the appetite. The next few days may see boundaries between sport and entertainment blur considerably.

One of the goals of such a format, the organisers say, is to build city pride, whatever they can rustle up in a few days. It's of course a different matter that the Delhi Jets has precisely one player (Abhishek Sharma) who's represented Delhi and the Mumbai Champs the same (Robin Morris). Players have been grouped according to the zones they come from and it will be interesting to see how they gel as a unit. Four or five international stars in one side adds some spice to the mix.

What the players seem impressed about is the quality of the support staff provided. Jock Campbell, an Australian physio, and CJ Clarke, his countryman who trained the Sri Lankan side that reached the final of the World Cup this year, have apparently cracked the whip during the camps. Masseuse (women, incidentally) have assisted them. Now that's a novel way to lure players.

In an official launch at Chandigarh's Taj, the organisers unveiled a funky trophy and announced an overall prize money of 15 crores (US$ 4 million approx). It includes prize money for all teams; a team can lose every game and still go back with INR 85 lakhs (US$ 213,000).

Jazzy television coverage is expected too - GPS devices being attached to players, displaying their heart-beat rates, body temperatures etc. A giant screen has been installed and disco-like arrangements have been set up on the stage. The first half-hour of all games will be shown across all channels of the Zee network. "Switch on the TV and see what we can do to Indian domestic cricket," seems to be the message. There was a suggestion that the third umpire will call no-balls but the umpires - four first-class umpires from England - have apparently insisted that their job remains the same.

Rains aren't expected but in case matches are curtailed it won't be the Duckworth-Lewis system being used. Instead the organisers have chosen the Jayadevan method, an Indian version that has been trialled in domestic competitions.

Another new rule to be enforced is that even if a batsman has made his ground, there will be no overthrows after the ball hits the stumps in an attempted run-out.

It's required the organisers to overcome several hurdles, the most interesting of these is this: the organisers were not allowed to use BCCI-accredited equipment and needed to travel to Dehradun to ferret out the only non-BCCI super-sopper in the country. The tournament is yet to begin but this must surely be a candidate for the scoop of the year.

Also noticed that Zee TV had pulled out the stops in terms of commentary team for the event...

Not the usual Rameez Rajas and Arun Lals, but Tony Grieg and a host of other top international commentators...

another rule which the icl should try in this tournament is the 4 bowler x 5 over rule instead of 5 bowler x 4 over rule. with 5 overs per bowlers, the bowlers bowling well will be able to bowl more

and you can see where Zee is gonna make its money...

Quote:
On Monday, in a bid to attract on-air advertisers, the promoters Essel Sports announced that the first 30 minutes of the matches will be telecast live across its 25 channels in India and overseas simultaneously. This initiative was taken after advertisers' lukewarm response to the promoters' decision to telecast the matches only on Zee Sports. Advertisers are now considering buying ten-seconds slots for around Rs 20,000. ICL executives are scouting for one on-air presenting sponsor who would pay around Rs 75 lakh and six associate sponsors who would pay nearly Rs 48 lakh each.

So Zee may break even or even make a decent sum...

Sure it was not the most exciting...but the fielding was MUCH, MUCH better than I expected...some of the stops by Taufeeq Umar were fantastic... and generally everybody looked the part of INTERNATIONAL class players...

The opening session with Kareena Kapoor was a bit of a dud...though she is looking much better now than the PUDGY dumpling she looked in the DON number...

The TV anchor person Mayanti Langer is quite good looking and she does not seem a total dimwit regarding cricket...

Greig was Greig and Thommo was Thommo...

Nice to See Ajit Wadekar going out there to toss the coin with Chris Cairns and Marvan Attapatu..

Overall a good begining...and I think it will be even better during the day...

A thought that occured is that about 10-15 years ago most of the best and brightest in India thought joining the IAS was the pinnacle of achievement...now they shoot for Infosys, Wipro, or even multinationals like IBM, Nokia, etc...

Similarly BCCI is like the old Govt. office babus...and ICL is like the dynamic entreprenuerial IT companies...

Similar thing happened with Air lines...we used to have only one domestic carrier the State owned Indian Airlines...and now there are over a dozen... and the service and efficiency has improved out of sight...

I see ICL playing the role of the Jet Airways or Kingfisher etc. compared to the BCCI being Indian Airlines...

The Biggest problem with this initial tournament is that ICL has managed to obtain only ONE ground...

If the matches had been held in the respective cities... i.e. Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderdabad, Kolkata, Mumbai it would have generated more response in terms of local fans showing up at the game..

Here it is a bit of an overkill and only the absolute die-hards would come out for more than a couple of first round games... though more should show up for the semis and the final....

I watched a bit of the ICL action over the weekend. Found it more interesting to watch than the one-sided Test match (although the Test has somewhat opened up now).

The good thing is all the players, both overseas pros and the Indian youngsters were taking it 100% seriously. Good to see the likes of Inzamam and Lara on the cricket field again.

Among the Indian players, I was impressed with Ali Murtaza (17 year old left-arm spinner). TP Singh's Jonty-esque run out of Craig Mcmillan yesterday was simply brilliant. It is definitely worth watching.

ICL is offering a WHOPPING $37 MILLION in Prize Money...

DAMN!!!

From Telgu Portal...

Panchkula (Haryana):The Indian Cricket League (ICL) announced prize money totalling $37 million (Rs.150 million) for its inaugural Twenty20 championship, starting here Friday.

The winner of the six-team event will pocket a handsome $1 million (Rs.39 million), Zee Sports chief executive officer Himanshu Modi announced here Thursday.

The runners-up will get prize money of $470,000 (Rs.19 million), Modi said.

Modi said the Essel group - promoters of the ICL - would spend up to $25 million on the inaugural event.

Much of the money is being spent on sprucing up the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex cricket stadium here up to the international standards and paying the players signed up by the ICL.

All six participating teams - Mumbai Champs, Kolkata Tigers, Hyderabad Heroes, Chandigarh Lions, Delhi Jets and Chennai Superstars - will get a part of the total prize money.

The teams coming third and fourth in the championship will get $370,000 (Rs.15 million) and $310,000 (Rs.12.5 million) respectively, while teams on the fifth and sixth slot will get $250,000 (Rs.10 million) and $210,000 (Rs.8.5 million).

Modi said that each team winning a match would get $45,000 (Rs.1.87 million), while every Man of the Match award will fetch $9,400 (Rs.375,000).

“The most valuable player of the tournament will not get any cash reward but something in kind. We are yet to decide on that,” Modi said.

“It is mere speculation that sponsors are not coming for the event or have withdrawn. We have Provogue, Thomas Cook and others who are sponsoring the event. Once the championship creates a market for itself, more will follow,” Modi said.

Essel group executive vice-president Ashish Kaul said that the Twenty20 championship was being held despite the odds.

“We faced numerous hurdles on the way. We were faced with comments that who will ever play for the ICL. We have proved them wrong. 250 players have enrolled with us, including top international stars,” Kaul said without naming anyone as the spoiler of the ICL party.

The last few days saw speculation on one of the best batsman in the world, Brian Lara, being coerced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), for its new Indian Premier League (IPL).

Lara’s late arrival for the ICL event only added to the drama. Lara, who holds the world record of maximum test and first class cricket runs and the highest individual test score of 400 runs not out, has been practicing here with the Mumbai Champs team for the last three days.

Modi said over 85 percent of the weekend tickets for matches have been sold and ICL was expecting a full house in the 6,000-capacity stadium.

Zee Sports will telecast all matches live while 25 channels of the Zee network will show all matches live for 30 minutes on match days.

BCCI is trying its LEVEL Best to STRANGLE the ICL..

I am elated at the reception: Kapil Dev

07 Dec, 2007

The chairman of the executive board Kapil Dev has expressed great satisfaction over the conduct in which the inaugural season of the Indian Cricket League has been acknowledged.

"I'm extremely proud of the way the ICL has shaped up. We might not have had teams blazing away to big totals so far, but in hindsight the ICC World Twenty20, too, saw the 150-mark being breached only eight times," the World Cup winning former captain said, adding that the organisers haven't got any reaction from the top bosses at the BCCI yet.

Kapil, who was also the coach of the Indian cricket team, said he was relieved when the Tau Devi Lal Stadium opened its doors for ICL's inaugural Twenty20 tournament.

"We thought we might have to play in open fields somewhere because everyone seemed to shut the door on us. I'm disappointed that Chandigarh didn't give us the (Sector-16 Stadium) ground even after pleading with them so many times."

Kapil said that he was confident about international players striking good form during later stages of the tournament. The former India captain, however, came back to his own venture saying that senior international players have been wonderful with the young Indian players, and one should not look into Brian Lara's Mumbai Champs failing to register a win so far.

"Results don't come overnight. If you look around, the likes of Chris Cairns and Inzamam have been brilliant with the young boys, and the standard of fielding in the tournament has been breathtaking. The seniors look as keen as youngsters," he said.
