There are several smaller goals that the team can aim towards and each should be embraced by each and every member of the team. The first goal should be to make the Australian pace bowlers bowl lots and lots of overs. The Australians pride themselves on their physical fitness, but they are human, and bowling over after over at express pace takes a lot out of a person. Batting by contrast takes much less out of you physically, though mentally it is probably tougher.
Second, India must render Brad Hogg totally toothless by judiciously going after him. No need to take extraordinary risks against him, but he must definitely be targeted, by each and every batsman.
If the first two goals are met, India will automatically take Australia into a Day 5, and that should also be a goal too. One of the incentives Ponting dangled before his bowlers to go all out for a win on Day 4, was the prospect of an additional days rest. India’s bowlers are done with bowling, but the more bowling the Australian bowlers do the better it will be for India in the next match in Sydney which starts just days later. This is especially true if India happens to bat first in Sydney.
Finally, but most importantly, India must enjoy their cricket. This is paramount. Yes the team is in a very dire situation, but there is no point getting all tense and worried about the outcome. Better to take it as it comes, and to truly enjoy yourself out there in the middle. The Indian batsmen had virtually no time to adjust to Australian conditions coming into the match, but here is a golden opportunity to get a lot of practice under the belt. Runs scored here will definitely stand them in good stead as they head to Sydney, and no better net session or net bowlers could ever have been arranged. If they happen to get anywhere close to the target, that will simply be icing on the cake.
