Wenger Entitled to be Judged in May
By Boris Mellor
November 7 2008
Wenger says he will not buy in January, that he has every faith in his team, and that he is entitled to be judged in May. Wenger certainly likes to be provocative; it seems a stupid statement to make. After all how does he know who will be fit and available in January.

There again if he said I will buy in January that would be a vote of no confidence in the current squad, that wouldn't exactly be great for morale. This team lacks enough confidence already without the manager telling them he doesn't think they are up to it, even if they aren't.

However I am not convinced that this squad will be collecting silverware in May, there are now too many mediocre players in it. I have always hoped that Bendtner would develop, but instead he has gone backwards. Van Persie does not seem to be half the player he was before his injury.

Sagna and Clichy are fine, but the centre backs are now quite ordinary, perhaps they can play better, but they are hardly young.

But the biggest problem is midfield, a midfield that can't shield the defence, and is not producing enough chances on a regular basis.

Arsenal face Man U without Adebayor and RvP, that means there is little pace in the team, and it's hard to imagine where the goals will come from. Will Fabregas increase on his tally of two goals? Will Nasri be more dynamic than he was on Wednesday, or will Diaby have a good game?

Man U are favourites to win at the Emirates, that can't have been the case for a long time. Having lost to Hull and Spurs at home Man U could be a mountain to climb. However during the week all the English teams did poorly in Europe, and Man U drew a while back at Everton. So even Man U are not in great form at present, some might think it's a good time for them to play us, but that could be true the other way around  too.

Fans must make sure that any resentment at Wenger to flash the cash does  not make itself known to the team against Man U. Any more negativity will destroy any confidence this team has left. A draw will be fine, a win brilliant, but if we lose we must still support the team. Some fans want Wenger out, be careful you may get what you wish for. His departure would destroy any hope of hanging on to Cesc.

A new manager would not guarantee success; just ask the bunch of jokers up the road. How many managers have they had? Perhaps you will argue for the Chelsea model, a club that sacked a manager for being runner up in CL and league. Wenger has built three great teams at Arsenal, he is struggling on the 4th, but the least he deserves is to be judged at the end of the season, not in early November.

Arsenal Possible squad: Almunia, Fabianski, Diaby, Sagna, Fabregas, Toure, Nasri, Gallas, Vela, Walcott, Denilson, Ramsey, Song, Silvestre, Wilshere, Gibbs, Djourou, Clichy, Bendtner

Wenger Entitled to be Judged in May

Well I imagine the "not buying in January" comment from Wenger is fairly understandable; as you say, no need to undermine current squad confidence (especially at the moment) but just as importantly let the scouts and suits quietly get any deals ready to be done without any publicity. There will be at least one new signing for Arsenal. (Kenyon has said the same thing but I´ll be surprised if there isn´t 1-2 new faces in and a few current ones out in January)

Your Van Persie form comments surprised me - I watched the Fnerbache game at the Emirates and I thought he looked keen and dangerous...oh well!

The Mancs are the favourites given current circumstances of confidence, injuries and RVP suspended BUT my tea leaves say that you will get something out of the game tomorrow - probably a bit of luck involved, ref decision..but you´ll get at least a point.

Getting rid of Wenger is all very well but WHO would the dissenters replace him with? Very easy to wail and protest - not so easy to come up with a real solution. If money is tight then what new manager could mould the team inti the shape he wants anyway?

The Chelsea model? Getting rid of Grant? Well my feeling is that we got as far as we did last season DESPITE Grant and that the club eventually realised this. Through one way or another the ship was steadied but he would never have got us playing (for example) like Scolari has at the moment.

Some interesting points Dixie, I just think RvP's shooting is not what it was. He also seems better on wing than down middle

We never get a decision against them nor any real luck, always the other way round.

Though your right when you say we'll get something, because we definitely will.

I think Dixon9 is praying for a draw because Chelsea and Liverpool will be much happier with that result.

YOu can't compare Chelski and Arsenal, it is like comparing haves and have nots!
But, if you guys know little about Scolari, I can tell you he is such a fox...you can't judge him anything by all these CL losses and ordinary performances. He is now focusing on PL and I can tell you he knows how and when to up the gears and not the opponents to have focus on him or his team. You will see him in full throttle only after the CL QF, having said that, I agree he has the means to do that...when you have all the top stars of each country.

Fact#1 - Fabregas had scored ONE GOAL only so far.

Fact#2 - We drew, not lost, to S*CUMS

FAct#3 - Out of 40-mil budget, Wenegr had used 'em up to buy yougnsters, paid of 23-mil for mortgage loan and enhanced cotnract fro Fabregas and Adebayor.

Fact#4 - Wenegr needs to sell beofre he cna buy.

30-mil for Fabregas to Barca?
25-mil fro Adebayor to Milan?

And also wage bill will be slashed drastically when these 2 highest earners leave Arsenal in January.

Base don current form, Ramsey, Denilson and Nasri are adequate repalcement for Fabregas in the middle....not forgettign Rosicky..figners crossed.

SImilarly, Eduardo, bendtner, Vela, Walcott are adequate repalcement for Adebayor.

Van Persie is in a class of his own..must be retained.

Huntelaar-Van Persie partnerhsip should be more fruitful than Adebayor-Van Persie with no understanding.

Do you guys have any info about Hleb..I don't see him playing Barca CL games highlight, is he injured / bench / reserve!!

Barca has Iniesta, Xabi, Yaya, Busquets, God knows how many more..
Go to Barca £30m - nah..they won't take him, rather, they would make him show the carrot and hide behind..no chance...big guns take you when you prove something somewhere else, our big headed boys must understand this, they are not worth in the market what they think they are..

I have no comments on Ade to Milan, not a penny more than £15m they would pay to sit him on the bench...

Looks like Arsene might be planning to kick there ass here is the link... although for Arsenal these type of news doesn't worth a seperate thread...

Arsene raid on Barca...ha ha ha

Well we are indeed entitled to judge wenger in MAY but what he is forgeting is that we have been watching and keeping faith for years so we are also entitled to react in anger, disapproval, loose confidence and all.

who waits for 4 years to see improvement but get nothing but only 'nearly did' for 4 years and still remains patient.Only The one who has no passion for the game.
wenger's words sickens me these days. gone are the days that he speaks words of wisdom.all i hear from him are words of an arrogant man who is so stubborn even a mull looks good.

As much as it pains me to admit it, I´d prefer an Arsenal win because I believe the Mancs will be much more dangerous to us later in the season.

My feeling on Liverpool is that they have been riding a bit of luck since the start of the season and they won´t mantain the pace.

Sorry Merlion it is one goal - yes Hull goal was not credited to any Arsenal player. Well he still needs to find his shooting boots, but was a lot better today.

he was better, one of his best game so far, if Wenger allows him to revert to hsi attacking isntinct and driving froward instead of training to be a box-to-box midfield in this new Trio of Denilson-Fabregas-Diaby.
