Gallas Stripped of Captaincy Who Will Replace Him?

Happier days
By Boris Mellor

Contacts in the media inform me that Gallas will almost certainly be removed as Captain. In my opinion Wenger had to act or appear very weak indeed. However this won't be the end of Arsenals problems, for much of what Gallas says rings true. The team is full of players not trying hard enough, indeed Gallas is one of them.

Nonetheless the problems run deep, clearly the players, especially Fabregas, do not believe in Wenger's project. Whether Wenger is right or not is no longer the issue, he clearly doesn't have the players behind him. He got them behind him for the Man U game, using the old technique of creating the siege mentality over Stoke; unfortunately you can't repeat that every week.

Wenger has got rid of the head stable boy, now he will have to clear out the stable. He will need help in doing that, who should the new Captain be? Some suggest Fabregas, but sorry you are wrong. Why? Because when the going gets tough the tough get going, and what Fab has done is hide.

Rumours have it that Almunia and Clichy are favourites, I would prefer Clichy he is a warrior. Almunia I am not too sure about, will he keep his place seems to be a bigger issue than should he be captain. Yes he is a great guy, and plays his heart out, but he doesn't always inspire confidence in the defence.

Whoever the new Captain will be, assuming it's true that Gallas has gone, the Kremlin remains silent, and there is an even bigger job to be done. To strengthen a depleted squad, and create unity, whether Wenger can achieve that remains to be seen. Unfortunately for him liberty has been interpreted as license.

About time. Padre is right that there are other problems but Gallas is not the person to remain as an Arsenal Football Club captain.

publicly sacking your captain is @#$%& bad though. it maybe that he had to go as captain but seriously thats hardly what the fans need.

Can't see Gallas playing for us anymore. After being stripped of captainsy, it's like a public humiliation. Don't think he'll want to play for us again.

Gallas can go. He's more of a disruptive element
than a unifying one.

Strangely enough, I feel this is like lancing a boil - painful at first but good in the long run.

For ages, we have all been saying we needed a new central defender, a holding midfielder and a new captain. Now, I think we may get them all.

Gallas was a poor captain (and a bad mistake by Wenger). He will leave now too, making our central defence problem more acute. Wenger will HAVE to buy a top notch central defender in January.

And if he makes Fabregas captain (and I think he will, even though I would prefer Clichy), he will HAVE to get extra support for Fabs in midfield to ease the burden what would otherwise be too much for him.

So just maybe Gallas has done us a favour and forced Wenger to do what needs to be done.
