India knocked out of Champions Trophy
By ICF Staff
October 1 2009
India is unable to reach the semifinals of the Champions Trophy, a second international shock after the early elimination from the T20 World Cup.

Given the absence of Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan, arguably the three top ODI players in the Indian side, it was only to be expected that they would not be as dominant as they otherwise might have been.

However the elimination of India before the semifinals comes as a rude shock to those who believe India is the number 1 ODI team in the world.

Luck played its part. After Pakistan won a lucky toss, they prevailed over India; a match against Australia was rained out, and then India hammered the West Indies.

When a single loss causes you to be eliminated from an international tournament, there is something lacking in the format.  However, Champions Trophy has always been a knockout format.

Dhoni and his team will be brought back down to earth with this loss, and the rare failure against Pakistan which forced them out of the tournament will rankle.

The team needs to put this defeat behind them, and ignore the brayings of the media.

Re: India knocked out of Champions Trophy
One loss( toss played a decisive role)...one win..one NR...nothing to be ashamed about....

Look at Pak and India

India and Pak vs Windies...look at the scores ...whose bowlers restricted the SAME Opposition on the SAME ground...India restricted WI to 120 odd...Pak gave 160-170 odd...We cruised in the chase...Pak barely managed it

India and Pak vs Aus....India conceded 230 odd in 43 odd overs before it rained ( remember we lost toss yet again)...who knows if India would have chased the total..Pak actually LOST the match...India vs Aus was at BEST 50-50

India vs Pak..We lost a VITAL toss..win toss..win match...Pak dint win the match...India LOST it...Gambhir and Dravid were run out...No Pak bowler worth his salt could even threaten these masters...forget masters...even Raina would have put the @#$%& back into the gutter they came from...except umpire thought otherwise....

Bottomline...Pakis have been given T20 WC and CT as compensation....ofcourse only if they play an "ok" cricket so that no serious doubts arise..if they are not good at acting ( I doubt since Paks are good actors..Anwar when he scored 194), then Aus might win it.

Re: India knocked out of Champions Trophy
The interesting point is that why is the CT so POORLY organized that they can't have a MAKE-UP day for a rain ruined match...

Australia may have made it to the semis...but they almost lost to Pakistan chasing a small total...so don't think they can be considered much better than India...

It also makes the Series in India a good one albeit a couple of games TOO long...

Wouldn't it be GREAT to beat up on the guys that kept us out of the CT semis....smiling smiley ?

I don't care about the result of IND-AUS series because I know India is much better team than Aus in most aspect.. What I care is how many youngsters are going to get chances who can solidly represent India in Test arena..

I think the article could have pointed out that all pre-tournament favorites were knocked out... except the Lucky Aussies who were under pressure against both Paksters and Windians...squeaking through both games...

Re: India knocked out of Champions Trophy
I don;t buy format, strength etc as excuses.

Ther CT is designed to reward those nations who can raise their standard on the given day pitch, toss notwithstanding.

It is also designed to reward teams that have the depth to come over the loss of 2 or 3 first choice players in the starting 11

Re: India knocked out of Champions Trophy
india deserved to be out of the tournament. bad bowling .. simple as that , say whatever u wunna say abt aus or pakis they BOWLED well, when it mattered. indian bowling is not bad, just that some posers need to bend their backs and pull their weight. toss ...whats the issue with tosses ,, smart teams compensate for toss losses restricting opposition to getable totals. aus vs pakistan is a prime example.

aus have lost legends in their team. yet they are still in the mix. thats why i always belive aus will always be fav in any tournament, as much as i like india to beat aus in the forth coming series i belive aus will come out winners .

Re: India knocked out of Champions Trophy
Every team ( that is in the semis) has at least two guys who hit 145+....and consistently bowl in 135-140 range.

India's bowling was popatwadi, batting too Dravid and Tendulkar dependent ( not one more batsman looked capable of getting a 70+ inning)...and captain's brain far too busy in trying to hide himself in the batting order

Speed doesn't matter - bowling at 140 on South African batting tracks can get you dispatched to the boundary that much quicker.

Yuvraj is the number 1 ODI batter in the world, Zaheer is the number 1 (or close) ODI bowler in the world, Sehwag is the most dangerous batter in the world. How you can lose all of them and still expect to win each and every game I don't know. We lost a single game, big deal - Aus never won a CT for many years at the top of their game when all their legends were playing.

==>.Between 130 and 140 is a HUGE diffrence...gives the batsman to stand up and hit thruhg the line crashin into the boundary....vs edging to the close-in or not clearing rhe infield.

Yuvraj is the number 1 ODI batter in the world, Zaheer is the number 1 (or close) ODI bowler in the world, Sehwag is the most dangerous batter in the world.

==>>That's right....India DOES NOT HAVE THE DEPTH...these tournaments are a test of temperament and depth

How you can lose all of them and still expect to win each and every game I don't know.

==>>If we have to be a top side we have to have the depth to abosrub losing top 2 or 3 palyers.

We lost a single game, big deal -

===>>Yes if we had won THAT SINGLE GAME we were throuhg.
b.t.w We WOULD have lost to Aus had that game been completed.....we were looking at chasing 320ish

Aus never won a CT for many years at the top of their game when all their legends were playing.

==>>Yes and that coutns against them

SA and SL both have pacers who can hit 142+ and both have less points than India.. but if one is hell bent on sacrificing somone all these things does not matter..

Re: India knocked out of Champions Trophy
Has Eng complained of not having their Sper players KP, Flintoff ?...and they don;t have even Braod today?

Aussies have a few missing including Clarke.

As I said the team that has to WIN Big Tournaments has to demosntrate depth in their cricket also.

if all my top 15 players are FIt and I win the toss and am on the right side of 50-50 decisions...only then will I win.....well then I will win a very few only

Re: India knocked out of Champions Trophy
now the discussion have taken a turn to missing players.. first it was bowlers.. keep it coming.. Flintoff has done nothing.. he is more of hype than substance.. KP i agree.. anyways England have surprised everyone with their performance.. cuz they have nothing to lose.. i agree to some extent that we should win without missing players.. but the way our pace and spin bowlers are bowling (line and length, not talking about pace) even presence of Sehwag/UV would not have saved us..

I am now doubting if Anu_D is the Sanjay Manjerakar types...self loathing, gleeful at India's losses..

She is the only proclaimed "Indian" in this forum who mindlessly savours Indian defeats just bcos she hates Dhoni..

Thankfully her types are not running cricket in India...
