Clash Of The Captains
By Indian Cricket Fever
March 15 2010
Less than 24 hours from now, one of the most anticipated clashes of the new IPL season will get underway at the venerable Eden Gardens, where the atmosphere promises to be supercharged as Ganguly’s Kolkata Knight Riders take on Dhoni’s Chennai Superkings.

The battle pits arguably India’s best ever captain versus inarguably (statistically) India’s most successful captain.  The teams will be coming into the match with contrasting records, so far.  Kolkata are unbeaten and sit atop the points table, Chennai sit dead last.  However, both Ganguly and Dhoni will be aware that T20 is a very, very unpredictable game, and there are no favorites.  Each team starts out with basically the same chance of winning a match.

However, what the T20 game has shown is that this makes the role of the Captain more important, not less.  The ability of the on-field leader to read the game, adjust tactics accordingly, take decisive actions, and inspire the team to perform at its best, becomes vitally important.  This  is what in the end differentiates the winners from the losers.

Is it any wonder that the winners of the first and second edition of the IPL were led respectively by those two brilliant leaders, Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist.  One game can never determine the true worth of a captain, but it can surely provide a glimpse into the abilities of the men at the helm.  Of course, one must not make the mistake of exaggerating the role of the captain, he can do everything right, and yet cannot play for the other ten men on the field who must also do their part.  But in the final analysis as the quote made famous by Harry Truman said “The Buck Stops Here.”

Re: Clash Of The Captains
after 2 seasons everything is settled in KKR with SG and SRK. I hope to see better results this time from KKR.
the two IPLS shows commanding captain in all aspects shows better results but i think this time all franchise have better captains and settled teams so it is hard to predict results.

Yes Atul... teams with weakish leaders.. or just unsuccessful ones... VVS...Dravid... Yuvraj...Ponting...McCullum... have given way to better leaders...

I was impressed with Ganguly's captaincy in the 2nd match. He seemed sharp and fully into the match. His team also has the momentum. Dhoni's CSK has their task cut out that's for sure.

Wasn't Ganguly the captain in IPL-1?

I just don't think Ganguly can hold his own as a player anymore and that will hurt KKR....

24 needed with a bunny coming in at 11? No problem!

Re: Clash Of The Captains
Ganguly batting at 3 is wrong move normally he is the player which needs 20 balls to get going. he should bat 5 or 6 .

He is just waiting for Gayle/Mac so he can go back to 5/6

Re: Clash Of The Captains
Gangs has four foreigner in his team - Hodge, Bond, Mathews and Shah.. so I think Hodge and Shah will get the boot if Gayle and McCullum come in.. But I think test series is starting soon between Nz and Aus so McCullum will not make it to KKR until end of March.. Gayle should be joining soon..

U r touching someone's wound heresmiling smiley..

I have been saying that Ganguly is not fit as T20 player from IPL-1, giving away 10 runs in field, losing 5-10 runs in running between the wickets, and he ain't no Gayle to smash the ball..so an utter liability in T20..

though his captaincy definetely adds value to KKR, He can do the captaincy as a non-playing captain/coach and spare KKR..

Re: Clash Of The Captains
Btw, here is the IPL scorecard where both these players have faced the same field...

1. Dhoni scored 66 vs Ganguly's 11
2. Dhoni's SR - 200, Ganguly's - 50
3. One of the biggest T20 drubbing handed to Ganguly by Dhoni
4. On IPL performance till date, CSK - 2 time Semifinalists, 1 time finalist..KKR, 2 time in last 2, once at bottom.

I will not compare them from now on in ANY aspect..it is proving to be an insult on second best ever Indian Captian, which does not suit Ganguly's stature..

@Birbal - Pl. be sensitive to Ganguly and stop these comparisonssmiling smiley

its classic - a certain individual tries to setup Dhoni for failure, miserably fails then crawls back into their hole.

OK it is do or die time again...

Except unlike a few weeks ago, this is for avoiding the bottom of the table....

Can Dada keep KKR from the bottom or will Dhoni rescue CSK from the cellar?
