Serial Umpire Baiter Ponting At It Again
By Indian Cricket Fever
March 23 2010
If one wants to see the official ICC record of Cricket’s bad boys, one should visit the ICC’s website where they keep a year-by-year list of all the players who have been sanctioned by ICC officials since 1992. Surprisingly one would find that Ricky Ponting has ONLY been sanctioned 6 times. Not surprisingly 4 out of the 6 times it was for arguing with the umpire.

Intimidating the umpire is an Australian tradition that goes back at least to the days of Ian Chappell, and though it was not as strongly pursued by some of his successors, such as the well respected Mark Taylor, or pursued in a subtle manner by others such as Alan Border and Steve Waugh, the current Australian captain has taken this seeming “birth-right” to never before seen depths of dissent.

The latest episode occurred during the recently concluded Test match at Wellington, New Zealand, when due to near gale force winds at the ground the stump camera was not able to provide reliable data to the third umpire, who was asked by the on-field umpires for assistance.  The third umpire then applied the well known law, that when in doubt the benefit goes to the batsman.  This precipitated a tantrum and argument from the boorish Australian captain, and required Match Referee Javagal Srinath to intervene.  Interestingly, no mention has yet been made in the media of whether Srinath will be imposing a fine, or even a match ban on Ponting.

If previous history is anything to go by, once again the Australian captain will escape either scot-free or at the worst with a token slap on the wrist.

Here are is a partial list of this Serial Offender’s offenses if the ICC officials want to take a look:

July 2009 In the Ashes Test , argued with umpire when bat, pad catch denied

June 2008 In ODI match versus West Indies showed dissent after caught behind  appeal was denied

September 2006 in ODI match versus West Indies showed dissent when wide was called

September 2006 in ODI match versus India argued with umpire after umpire recalled Tendulkar given out wrongly

April 2006 in Test versus Bangladesh disputed umpires decision

August 2005 Showed dissent in Ashes Test when given run out by substitute fielder

October 2003 Argued with umpire in ODI about a wide given

Not all of these incidents by the way, led to disciplinary action.  And the strongest was a fine of 100% of match fees, and most time it was simply 20-30% of match fee docked.  On several occasions no action was taken.  Contrast that with the actions taken against Indian and other non-white players and one sees a pattern of institutionalized racism emerge.   If you don’t believe me, just peruse the list of fines levied by the ICC here:  http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/breaches-and-penalties.php

Of course the actions mentioned are those that Ponting himself was guilty of.  This does not include the multitude of offenses others committed when he was in charge.  From the recent head-butting of Scott Styris by Mitchell Johnson, to the confrontations with Sulieman Benn and Gautam Gambhir orchestrated by the Australians.  On top of these actions, the raising of his finger to give Sourav Ganguly out in the controversy marred Sydney Test of 2008, as well as scores of other similar incidents.

It is high time that Ponting and his street thug antics be appropriately dealt with, which means a ban for several matches, and maybe even several psychotherapy sessions to help him deal with this obvious issues.

Will Ponting Be Punished For Again Arguing With Umpire?
The guy has argued with umpires many times... and his behavior is surely bringing the game into DISREPUTE...

The ICC should throw the book at him... but somehow I doubt they will the bloody a$$ lickers...

Australia captain Ricky Ponting figured in a fresh row, arguing with the on-field umpires and holding up game for several minutes on day four of his team's first Test against New Zealand in Wellington.

With gushing winds -- measuring 130kmph -- sweeping the stadium, the virtual-eye cameras could not provide the actual trajectory of the ball and that infuriated Ponting who kept arguing with the umpires.

Former India pacer Javagal Srinath, the ICC Match Referee, had to come down and talk to both the teams after the incident, according to an Australian Associated Press report.

Problem started when Nathan Hauritz's LBW appeal against Brendon McCullum was turned down by Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf, prompting Ponting to seek a video referral under the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS).

But with the cameras failing to project the accurate path of the ball, third umpire Aleem Dar upheld Rauf's decision.

Ponting was agitated with the decision and kept arguing with Rauf and the other on-field umpire Ian Gould of England.

Srinath said all the cameras were shaking because of the wind and there was nothing anyone could do.

"It is a very unusual day, a very, very unusual day," Srinath said.

"I just went down and briefed the teams so that they should not be taken aback if the pictures are not coming and how are they making this decision?"

"If we can't decide, the challenge is null and void and they get it back," he said.

He always seems to be arguing with Umpires...yet he hardly gets punished...

Guess it is advantegous to be cappo of a gora team...

In eyes of ICC officials you, by definition, cannot bring game into disrepute...

I would have "courage" to if I am encouraged by the authorities to flout the law...

Srinath should have FINED him...his entire match fee...at a minimum... and probably should have banned him for a match or two... given his past behavior...

Recommendations to see a psychiatrist or psychologist wouldn't have been out of place either...smiling smiley

that means Srinath did not have courage.

If Ponting bullies and gets away......I don;t see that as his fault actually

It only means his fault went unpunished - Just because he went unpunished does not mean he is not at fault.
Also ,there is no question of courage here - nobody is going to fight a bloody war on cricket field.
It just means Srinath was lenient.

If he was not convicted implies he didn't commit a fault

It just means Srinath was lenient.

it could also mean even srinath is a gora a.s.s. kisser

Wrong. You are living in different world.

If that is the case then many match referees will be classified as ass lickers.
Well,in any case Srinath does not need to kiss anyone's ass - he is a match referee.

Not in Wellington. They don't call it 'Windy Wellington' for nothing.

I agree with anu here. If the umpires and match referees dont see a pattern here and punish Ponting, it is a failure in their part. Actually it is worse than what Ponting did..

I dont see any point in being lenient w/ a proven serial offender.

Re: Serial Umpire Baiter Ponting At It Again
The key words are 'proven' and 'serial'

If you are refering to the monkeygate, it was not proven. also he was not even accused of racism before or after the incident.

If you are refering to slapgate, it was in IPL and he was punished for that.

How many times Harbhajan has claimed bumped catches?

How many times he has argued with the Umpires?

I'm not saying he is whiter than white (no racim here !), but comparison with Ponting is not fair to him.

Re: Serial Umpire Baiter Ponting At It Again
Wasn't he given lenient treatment in one case because the disciplinary panel had not been given his previous record? Or was that another serial offender?

He's also been hauled up under ECB rules for misconduct at Surrey.

He may have got off for lack of evidence in one case, but to me he's still a serial offender.

Please check the list the ICC keeps...you will see Bhajji has been docked many, many times... and so too Ganguly... for offenses much less offensive than Ponting's...

Exactly. He's a proven, serial, offender. Who still got off lightly in one case because the ICC messed up the paperwork.

Can the referee decide to fine someone unilaterally? Doesn't he need someone (the opposition team or umpire) to launch a complaint?

Re: Serial Umpire Baiter Ponting At It Again
Apparently the Match Ref can... If it is deemed to be a Level 3 offense... and intimidation of umpire is a Level 3 offense...The line between disputing the umpires decision, a Level 2 offense, and intimidating the umpire is a thin one...and given Ponting's history of disputing umpire decisions... it could be considered this was Level 3...

Also, the two umps...the on field ump Asad Rauf and the 3rd Ump Aleem Dar... should have lodged a complaint...for a Level 2 offense... but apparently they didn't... ergo they were INTIMIDATED... and so Srinath should have lodged a Level 3 charge...

There are clearly two different standards in use by the ICC.

The mistake of the BCCI is its failure to highlight these regular inconsistencies.

Pawar is going to take over the ICC soon. If he cannot enforce equity in these cases, then India will deserve it.
