IPL Ennui
By Gaurang
April 5 2010
Despite the Bollywood tinsel and glitter, The IPL league matches have begun to drone on, and at least this fan is losing interest.

The lack of any sort of consistency in the line-ups with internationals combined with totally unknown locals, makes it hard to keep track of who is in which team.

The apparently totally unpredictable form of the sides, some of which can be attributed to the extremely abbreviated format, but some it it seems suspciously planned out, means that every team is still in with a chance.

Theoretically this is a good thing  as fans of every team will remain interested and there will be no “dead rubber” matches.  This is what Lalit Modi has said is the USP of his league.  That this also ensures maximum eyeballs, which translate into maximum Advertising revenue, according to him is obviously besides the point...ahem...

In reality, the IPL still doesn’t have a city based fan base, and considering India’s individualistic and hero-worshipping culture it is unlikely that that will ever be the case.  Most fans are interested in following “Star” players no matter which city they play for, and the results of the matches are not that important, as long as the “Star” does well.  So I am not so sure trying to ensure that no team is eliminated too early, is really a relevant goal.

What is also silly in the extreme is that after a long and tedious league phase the Semifinals and finals are knock out games.  Does this make any sense?  Why not at least have best of three contests for these crucial matches, which will truly test the level of the sides, instead of relying on what may be one bad day at the office for one side, or a brilliant fluke for the other?

This is something the organizers should look into for the next edition.  Nobody wants a fluke winner, especially when the road to getting to the playoffs is so long and tortuous .

Birbal...looks like you are getting too influenced by that old phart, khadoos Gabbar (Sm126)

Don't rationalize IPL too much....just enjoy.

admittedly we don't remember the IPL games for too long....but while they last many are thrilling....like the one that just finished Warne spun and led RR to an unbelievable win over DC.

Have you never enjoyed eating spicy Chaat from a road side stall that doesn;t aspire for michellin stars?

Have you never enjoyed David Dhawan movies?
Have you never enoyed the Munnabhai series?
You don't rationalize these nor do these movies crave for awards...they just entertain...pure simple entertain.

Like-wise IPL is not meant to be rationalized, analyzed...it's pure entertainment while it lasts and each of the last 2 times it has left a feeling of emptiness for the weeks following it's end

Your point about IPL being cricket equivalent of "Fast food" is fine...but you cannot eat fast food day in and day out...without getting sick...

Also don't you think it is silly that the Semis and the Final are simply ONE match knockouts?

==> that would be the case if you were having 3 IPLs every year.....one tournament is just fine

Also don't you think it is silly that the Semis and the Final are simply ONE match knockouts?

it's a minor glitch, which will be ironed out when the s.f knockouts are applied over 10 teams from next year instead of only 8.

You see in the pure masala format viewer love KnockOuts...it adds THRILL
again don't rationalize too much as you would if an international W'Cup or even a single test match was at stake....just enjoy, little glitches will be ironed out as it progresses as we have seen.
It doesn;t require an ICC comitte to meet, review, discuss, analyze, vote to make a change in formats.....one man just does it

Indians thrive on chaos . IPL is Indian made beautiful chaos.
each person would like to identify with something and new things are always welcome . there is not enough stuff to identify for 1bn populations and IPL is logical thing since most of the Indian associate with cricket.
this is Indian product and it is giving job, money , entertainments, future to lot of People.

Re: IPL Ennui
The most nonsensical aspect is that there is no such thing as a favorite, no such thing as a seeding. On any given day, any team can win and any player can do well.

The only interest I have in IPL is to see how a player I know is doing. For example, the human interest story is how well Tendulkar is playing, or that Gilchrist or Ganguly can still play a big innings years after retirement against the top names in cricket today, etc.

Other than that, it's bakwaas.

Knowing that Modi is so keen on projecting all the teams as equally good, that he can actually punish our best batsman for saying that a particular team is poor, is laughable. I do wonder about match manipulation due to this need of the administrators.
