Damp wickets and untrimmed outfields
By Dennis Wright
May 25 2003
Damp wickets and untrimmed outfields resulted in low scoring games in this weekend’s G & M fixtures as many grounds suffered lost preparation time at the hands of the persistent rain. 4 teams successfully defended scores below 100, whilst many more suffered heavy defeats as they posted low scores.

In 1G top team Stapleford were bowled out for just 83 at home to Rainworth Welfare who started the day in 2nd place. With the scores tied going into the last over and 3 wickets in hand Rainworth were confident of victory. Mark Greaterux (4/25) then bowled a magnificent over backed up by his fielders to dismiss the last 3 batsmen for no runs, ensuring a tied game.

In 1H Nottingham Victoria could only manage 58 runs but Flintham were unable to reach that total as the last 3 batsmen were run out trying to get the tying single.

In 1D, Awsworth (146/5) were pushed to the last over before claiming Nuthall’s final wicket to win by 3 runs. The finish was equally tense at Old Paviors II (212/4) as they only had a ball to spare to beat Newstead (209/3). Ellerslie II in 2B fought hard to contain Bottesford who passed the winning line with an over and one wicket to spare. Earlier, wicket-keeper Peter Sharp had taken 4 stumpings and two catches to equal the league’s 2nd best performance ever.

Calverton (123/2), have continued their winning ways with an emphatic 8 wicket victory over Plumtree (119) to maintain their hold on the top of 1A. Long Eaton, who were promoted with Calverton last season, are lying 2nd after their own impressive performance away at Gotham. Marc Brown hit the league’s only century (123*) as Long Eaton finished on 207/7, but dogged resistance from Adam Measom (47) helped Gotham (146/7) hold on for a Losing Draw.

Gedling Colliery (150/4) beat Eastwood Town (146/9) and Radcliffe-on-Trent (163/7) got the better of Attenborough (140/9) in a Winning Draw. Newstead Abbey & Village (60/1) had little trouble beating Stanton-by-Dale (54). Bramcote (145/6) move into mid table position beating Bottesford (92) and the return of Majid Saeed saw a win for Notts Amateurs (188/7) away to Gedling & Sherwood (148).

League President Trevor Vennett-Smith returned to captain Thrumpton (217/3) for the 1st time in 10 years and led his side to a comfortable win over Thurgarton (115/9).

Wilsons top 1c after their 5 wicket win at home to Keyworth (64). Kirkby Portland moved into 2nd place beating Risley (104) by 6 wickets. Ellerslie (127/5) tied for that 2nd spot after beating West Bridgfordians (124). A rare defeat was recorded for Hickling (127/9) who had recovered from 50/7 away to Wymeswold (131/6). Meanwhile, Darren Wright ripped through Toton Sycamore‘s (72), batsmen returning figures of 6/5 then he carried his bat for 40 to help Lady Bay Boots by 8 wickets.

2nd replaced 1st in 1F as West Indian Caribs (142) beat Lowdham (125). Another defeat for East Leake (86), this time away to Ruddington, sees them slip off the pace at the bottom of 1E.

Epperstone (104/8) held their nerve to win a close game against Caunton (95/9) in 2G. Another tight match as Sutton Bonnington (154/8) with 2 overs to go needed 7 runs for victory against a rejuvenated Hucknall TA (155/7) but failed by 2 runs. Gladstone’s Peter Ford took a hat-trick against Lambley (149/9) but his side could not reach the target required, falling short by 55 runs.

Basford Hall old boys (57/5) beat Stanton (56) to maintain top spot in 1H whilst Carrington Cavaliers (104/7) had a battle with former leaders Hoveringham (103).

In 2A Kimberley Institute suffered a 2nd successive defeat this time at home to Wollaton. Wollaton II batting 1st scored a modest 149 but when Kimberley II batted Ashley Stephenson was in fine form taking the day’s best bowling figures of 7/35 to win by 49 runs. Plumtree II (185/9) head the division after a Winning Draw away to Hucknall II (141/8), whilst Clifton Village, (106/4) lay 2nd after beating Southwell (105). Radcliffe (124) beat Attenborough (61) in a low scoring game.

Gedling Colliery II (143/7) emulated their 1st XI with victory over Eastwood Town (138) to maintain their 100% record at the top of 2B. Long Eaton II (110/3) did likewise to Gotham II (106). Stanton-by-Dale fared better than the 1st with a win at home to Newark (105) by 7wkts to maintain their top spot in 2C.

Loughborough (110) lost to Caythorpe III (101/4) to leave them rooted to the bottom of 2C along with Newark. Attenborough III have climbed the league every season and are looking to do the same again as they now have 4 wins beating West Bridgfordians (98) by 5wkts. Thrumpton’s (183/3) Steve Weightman (91) hit the 2nd XI top score as his side crushed Kimberley III by 100 runs.

Neill Chantrill took the weekend’s 2nd hat-trick as Shepshed Town (103) hung on to victory over Cotgrave (101) in 2G. Plumtree III (56) suffered their 1st defeat away to Lowdham (80) allowing Clifton Village (209/6) to take over at the top of 2G after beating Thrumpton III by 163 runs.
