| Both matches had spectators on the edge of their seats right until the last rites were served and credit is due to all the clubs who competed in two marvellous matches. The Bolsover and West Indian Cavaliers match saw an incredible 602 run aggregate recorded in just 75 overs and both sides come out with maximum credit for this marvellous spectacle. Batting first Bolsover reached an amazing 320 for 5 in their 40 overs with Tariq Rashid contributing another brilliant 131 runs to his mammoth total for the season, and Chris Cowley battering a sensational 110 runs as the Cavaliers were sent chasing all over the park in a vain attempt to restrict the score. Not that this score as huge as it seemed was safe as the Cavaliers went for the jugular right from the start. Mohammed Masood smashed a tremendous 85 and excellent support from Olsen Murrain (59) and Manwar Sultan (68) had the Bolsover fielders quaking in fear of losing after amassing such a fearsome total. As it turned out the Cavaliers just failed but what a glorious failure it was as they were bowled out for 282 in just 35 overs. There can be no doubt that the target was reachable had the match gone the full distance, but this was a spectacle to behold and a real credit to Bassetlaw cricket. Eddie Grant with 3 for 26 bowled absolutely brilliantly for Bolsover and it was his fantastic spell which made the difference between two very good sides on the day. Although there was nowhere near as many runs scored in the North Wheatley v Blyth encounter the excitement level was just as great in a pulsating match which had several twists along the way. Blyth were grateful to Greg Willcocks who made a superb 44, and Richard Wild who was unbeaten on 34 as they reached a respectable 153 for 9 on a wicket which certainly helped the bowlers. Wheatley skipper Jamie Bovill with 3 for 19 bowled a magical spell at a time when it was really needed and probably turned the match in his sides favour. Back came the Blyth attack firing on all cylinders and Wheatley were quickly in trouble as they lurched from one disaster to another. However a wonderfully mature innings by 16 year old James Blackwell who made a brilliant unbeaten 62 took his side to a narrow three wicket success and he finished it in the grand manner with two towering sixes! Mark Ambrose was the pick of the Blyth attack with 3 for 42, but this was another game in which cricket was the winner and both sides can be proud of the performance that they put on. North Wheatley will meet Bolsover in the final at Stone Close,
Kiveton Park’s ground on Sunday 7th September. |
