England win with magnificent bowling performance
By Jon Artman June 12 2005
England thrashed Hampshire in a brillint bowling performance which included a mind-blowing hattrick from Darren Gough. The match was a one-day warm up for the upcoming Natwest Series including England, Australia and Bangladesh.
Hampshire won the toss and consequently elected to field, a decision which was truly and utterly regretted later on in te run chase. But the Hampshire bowlers made early inroads, Geraint Jones out for a golden duck after a poor shot which was an easy catch for Udal. Trescothick also failed to impress, and was caught at slip off the bowling of guest Jon Lewis. Vaughan and Strauss steadied the ship, but soon Vaughan departed, trapped lbw by a good ball from Billy Taylor. The crowd were then also dissapointed by Flintoff, who was also out with a poor shot, leaving England in trouble on 72-4. But then came a match-winning partnership from Strauss and Pietersen, who both played wonderful innings. The bowlers failed to penetrate them, and they took an unduly advantage playing some nice boundaries. Pietersen also struck two hefty sixes. Inevitably though Pietersen finally went for 77, which sparked another collapse. Collingwood was dismissed almost immediately, and so was Gareth Batty. Strauss then missed out on a deserved century, but Gough and Kabir Ali slogged to mke sure of a competitive score. From the start of the Hampshire innings, they had no chance. Kenway went in the first over, lbw off Jones. Jon Lewis came in at an ambitious number 3, bu went for a golden duck, Hampshire reeling on 0-2. Vikram Solanki, another guest, was also out for a duck, run out after 10 balls of humiliation. The embarassment got worse for Hampshire, when Gough bowled an amazing hattrick dismissing McMillan, Benham and Crawley. That left Hampshire in utter disarray on 14-7. Captain Shane Warne was also out desperately trying to recover the innings. Shaun Udal finally did something to please the Hampshire faithful, smashing Kabir Ali all over the place, before he was out edging to Pietersen. Opener Lamb was still around and survived for a period but he inevitably failed and was caught at slip. England completed a 153 run victory as Tremlett was clean bowled by Ali.
