England v Pakistan 2nd One Day International
By Jon Artman December 12 2005
Pakistan defeated England in a close 2nd one day international. Liam Plunkett's last gasp effort at the end of the innings to boost the score was not enough to prevent the Pakistanis from chasing down the total.
Pakistan won the 2nd one day international in an entertaining 2nd one day international. England won the toss and Trescothick elected to bat first. The captain was out early to a Akhtar yorker for just 16, who quickly removed Strauss who edged to slip. Pietersen steadied the boat with a quickfire 28 before Naved-Ul-Hasan clean bowled him. The big dissapointment was that Freddie Flintoff could not continue his heroics after being named Sports Personality of the Year. He let the mini collapse continued and went for a lowly duck. The turmoil carried on as opener Prior was bowled by former Middlesex paceman Abul Razzaq. Geraint Jones was the next batsmen in, who defended and held his posiion for a few overs but was unable to hol his ground longer, eging behind to the wickie Khan. With England desperate to savour something from the innings, Blackwell smashed 2 boundaries before he departed too, bowled by Akhtar. Then came Liam PLunkett. The Durham fast bowler has only joined the set-up for this tour, yet he looked like a veteran, especially as he is not a batsmen. He played brilliantly, steadily scoring 56 to save the innings from complete disaster. He even hit a six as well as 4 fours. Solanki supported hi very well, as he should as a top order batsmen, although he came in at 10. England were all out for 230. Pakistan cruised to victory, and batted very well indeed. They had a solid opening partnershipof 86, before Andrew Flintoff made a vital breakthrough to give them a slight chance of winning, he clean bowled Salman Butt. Collingwood was used thoroughly in the innings, and managed to dismiss Younis Khan, bowling him not too much after the first wicket. But the star of the match and the Pakistan innings was Kamran Akmal, who hit an excellent century, and was dismissed shortly after reaching the milestone on 102, from an outstanding catch from supersub Solanki off the bowling of Harmison. But it was too late as Akmal had put Pakistan in the driving seat and Inzamam-Ul-Haq finished the match in quickfire style, bludgeoning 31 from just 25 balls, hitting 6 boundaries. Congratulations to Pakistan, the series is now tied at 1-1, and all to play for in the 3 remaining games. Bring on Karachi on Thursday.
