England's centrally contracted players for 2002/2003. No surprises other than the omission of Alec Stewart, and the leaving open of one spot.

Contracted Players - 2002/2003

The ECB have announced that the following players will be centrally contracted for 2002/2003:

  • Nasser Hussain (Essex, Capt)
  • Mark Butcher (Surrey)
  • Andrew Caddick (Somerset)
  • Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire)
  • James Foster (Essex)
  • Ashley Giles (Warwickshire)
  • Darren Gough (Yorkshire)
  • Matthew Hoggard (Yorkshire)
  • Graham Thorpe (Surrey)
  • Marcus Trescothick (Somerset)
  • Michael Vaughan (Yorkshire)
The surprise omission from the squad is long-serving wicketkeeper-batsman Alec Stewart, who declined to tour with the team this winter in India and New Zealand. He has however this week stated that he feels he can contribute a lot more to the team than current wicketkeeper Jamie Foster, even at the age of 38.

England have left one spot open, in the hope that it will be fiercely contested for by the likes of Usman Afzaal, Ian Bell (both who were in the full England squad this winter), Steve Harmison and Stewart himself.
