Captain's Table

Sobers - legendary
By Mike Taylor / Alan Rowley
May 26 2003
Top table at the Chesterfield Cricket Club’s Sporting Lunch on Friday became Captain’s Table as Chesterfield captain David Adams conversed with the legendary all-rounder and former West Indies captain, Sir Garfield Sobers.

Adams, Sting in the Tail’s Premier League Player of the Year 2002, was one of a hundred guests at the Chesterfield Hotel to hear Sir Garry recall his early days in Barbados and reminisce on a variety of interesting incidents during his many years playing for the West Indies.

He commented on the modern game and spoke forcefully on lessons that he believed the West Indies and England should draw from Australia’s success through a commitment to young players.

After talking for over an hour, Sir Garry closed with a brief account of one of the most famous cameos in the history of cricket – his 6 sixes of a Malcolm Nash over at Swansea.

A great way to end the week with the sale of tickets together with proceeds from a raffle and an auction raising funds for Chesterfield’s youth development programme.
