By David Bell
August 16 2003
Hundall pushed closer to another Division One championship but not without a scare against second placed Stanton In Peak. Stanton made 143-7 (Anthony Gladwin 41, Dave Rosling 40, Barry Cox 6-56) from their allocation and saw Hundall achieve a narrow 1 wicket victory to go 73 points clear at the top.

De La Salle moved into third by posting 230-9 declared (Green 91, Rusby 4-60) against Old Edwardians / Collegiate, who were bowled out for 133 (Bellamy 67, Willey 4-28). Fourth placed University Staff scored 240-2 (Kerry 119 no, Khan 88 no) away at Hathersage, who held out for the draw at 125-7 (Baptiste 4-41). Just 41 points separate the bottom five teams.

Bottom side Dronfield Woodhouse continued their good form of recent weeks against Parkhead. Alan Maskrey (5-42) helped to bowl out Parkhead for 155 and saw Jason Oxley (77) guide Woodhouse to a six wicket win. Centralians scored 181-5 (I.Marshall 43, C.Siddall 4-51) away at second bottom Stocksbridge, who attained the draw at 166-9 (E.Price 63, J.Eberlin 5-36). Sheffield Works Department made a challenging 265-6 (John Woods 69, Simon Pass 94, Ian Lake 55 no) at home to Baslow, who also held out for the draw at 145-9 (Simon Westwell 57, Brad Sampson 5-46).

The inexperienced Old Edwardians / Collegiate II side became the seasons first relegation victims. Grindleford declared at 245-2 (Outram 58 no, Brown 160) and dismissed Old Eds for 96 (James Outram 4-26) to consign them to Division Three cricket next season.

Holmesfield's impressive batting continues to dominate at the top of Division Two. They cracked 313-7 (T.Youngs 124, T.Hamilton 86, R.Ghose 4-84) and then bowled out Parkhead II for just 79 (C.Banks 6-39, P.Silcock 4-5). Second placed Ashford had to be content with a close fought draw at Bakewell. Bakewell registered 145-9 (Luckraft 58, Carrington 4-39, Marsden 4-44), which Ashford followed with 137-7.

Chesterfield Barbarians climbed into fourth by bowling out Stocksbridge II for 95 (Hubbard 5-29) after having been dismissed themselves for 182. Akeel Sarwar (44) guided Millhouses to 122 against Sheffield Works Department II, who were in turn sent back for 77 (Mumtaz 7-26).

The Division Three title race is still wide open after one time runaway leaders Calver suffered yet another defeat. De La Salle's Paul Lally took 5-22 to bowl them out for 121 and see his side gain a four wicket victory (T.Wainwright 65). Second placed Centralians II also suffered a defeat, this time against lowly Calow. Calow posted 202-9 (Smith 89, Kennedy 5-49) and dismissed Cents for 120 (Helliwell 53, Atkin 4-31).

Third placed Hathersage II gained a useful three wicket win (Smith 50, Buckton 40) away at University Staff II, who had earlier made 158-8 (Mark Franklin 75 no). Dronfield Woodhouse II were bowled out for 184 (R.Barnsley 84, P.Allen 5-16) by Laycocks, who moved into fourth with seven wickets down (R.Wainwright 45, P.Allen 47). Bottom club Millhouses II made a useful 186-6 (Shaw 5-49) but still went down to Hundall II by five wickets (Wigfield 63 no).

Division Four remains equally wide open. Ridgeway fell to third despite having the better of a drawn match with leaders Richland Wanderers. Ridgeway made 163-9 but saw Richland reach the draw at 125-6. BT Pensions / AGD I moved into second by beating Great Longstone. Paul Ramsdale took 5-26 to bowl Longstone out for 100, which Pensions passed with two wickets down.

Coal Aston's 177-7 (Brian Hemstalk 45, Barry Eke 45) was matched exactly by Baslow II (Ed Proudfoot 48, Andy Wood 6-45) in a tied affair. Garth Lewis (4-37) helped to bowl out Stocksbridge III for just 60, which his Transport side passed without loss (S.Ali 57 no). Zingari had mixed fortunes over the weekend. On Saturday, they restricted Chesterfield Barbarians II to 145-9 (S.Barton 68, N.Smallwood 5-27) and gained a six wicket win (Harris 55 no). Sunday saw them go down by 76 runs (Harris 47, Pearce 4-40) to Coal Aston, who made 167-5 (Lumsden 66 no).
