Kasprowicz cashes in on bowler-friendly pitch

6 for 47

Eighteen wickets fell on the opening day of Glamorgan's Frizzell County Championship Division Two clash with Durham at The Riverside.
Michael Kasprowicz grabbed six-47 on his return from a hamstring problem while Darren Thomas claimed four for 23 to help skittle Durham for just 124.

But Glamorgan's batsmen fared little better, stuttering to 196 for eight at close, a lead of 72.

Durham had won the toss and elected to bat but Kasprowicz made the most of conditions which saw the ball swinging around and the last ball of the third over reared up and hit Gary Pratt on the helmet which forced the opener to go off for treatment, after making just four.

A similar ball in Kasprowicz's next over accounted for Ashley Thorpe, as he managed only to fend a lifter to Dean Cosker at gully.

Durham looked to be over the worst of it after reaching 41 for the loss of only Thorpe, but Kasprowicz struck again in the 11th over as he clean bowled Nicky Peng.

His next over drew a leading edge from Michael Gough as he attempted a cover drive, with Ian Thomas safely taking the catch and Danny Law's dismissal soon after - caught behind by Mark Wallace - added to Durham's problems as they slumped to 49 for four.

Ian Pattison and Andrew Pratt steadied the ship slightly and shared the best partnership of the innings as they put on 35 for the fifth wicket before the former became Thomas' first victim when his pull shot was caught by Robert Croft at short midwicket.

That dismissal brought Gary Pratt back to the crease but his return was short lived as, four balls later, he was caught and bowled by Thomas after adding four runs to his earlier score.

Nicky Phillips also fell cheaply to Thomas and Durham's hopes of a bonus point rested on the shoulders of Pratt, but he was 10 runs short of his half-century when he was adjudged lbw to Thomas.

Kasprowicz claimed the final two wickets of Mark Davies and Steve Harmison as Durham failed to reach 200 in their first innings for the sixth time this season.

Glamorgan's openers made the wicket look far less troublesome and Steve James and Thomas got off to a solid start, putting on 43 before the latter fell to Davies for 15 attempting a back foot drive which found the gloves of wicketkeeper Pratt.

James helped take the score into three figures and looked set to complete his half-century until he attempted a late cut but was snapped up by Law at first slip.

Adrian Dale (35) then went caught and bowled to Harmison while Davies struck again to remove Mike Powell for one as Glamorgan slumped to 106 for four.

The visitors only had themselves to blame for the next wicket, with a mix-up between the stumps leading to Matthew Maynard being run out for 15.

Croft decided attack was the best form of defence and smashed 33 from 23 balls before being bowled coming down the track to Phillips.

Wallace was next to depart, caught by Neil Killeen at deep backward square leg off Harmison for 18, and the last wicket to fall on an eventful day saw Thomas caught at point by Gary Pratt to give Davies his fourth wicket.
