Greenidge puts Northants in charge
By Ananova August 21 2002
Northamptonshire moved into a commanding position on day one of their Frizzell County Championship clash with Glamorgan, finishing 61 runs ahead with seven wickets in hand.
Carl Greenidge was the star of the show with the ball, taking five for 44.

After bowling the visitors out for 144 in 40 overs, Mal Loye and Robert White put on 104 for the opening wicket to give the hosts the upper hand.

Loye enjoyed a slice of luck in the first over of the reply, when he went for an extravagant pull off Mike Kasprowicz and edged just short of the slips.

He took full advantage of that however, as, together with White, he looked to take the attack to Glamorgan.

Just after tea Loye went for 41, getting an inside edge through to wicketkeeper Mark Wallace.

David Sales looked dangerous in his typically aggressive 37 before Dean Cosker's left-arm spin proved his undoing, Mike Powell taking the catch at first slip.

Three overs later White's entertaining knock was over at 80, Andrew Davies bowling the perfect yorker to get through his defence.

Jeff Cook (21 not out) and Tony Penberthy (17 not out) shared an unbeaten stand of 38 to guide Northamptonshire to 205 for three at the close.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, the visitors never recovered from a devastating opening spell from Greenidge, who took three for 24 in his first five overs.

Ian Thomas went in the second over of the day without troubling the scorers to set the tone for a disappointing day for Glamorgan.
