Glamorgan staring at defeat

4 wickets
By Ananova August 22 2002
Glamorgan's promotion hopes appear to be fading after another disappointing batting display left them facing an early County Championship defeat against Northamptonshire.
A four-match unbeaten run, which included two victories, saw them climb the table and threaten to snatch a promotion place in the final weeks of the season.

But they trail by 67 with only four second-innings wickets remaining after reaching 164 for six before bad light brought an early end to the second day's play at Northampton.

The deficit could have been greater had it not been for a batting collapse which saw Northamptonshire lose their last six wickets for 20 runs as they were dismissed for 375 in reply to Glamorgan's first-innings total of 144.

Glamorgan's top six batsman all reached double figures in the second innings but could not go on and make the big score that was needed, with only Adrian Dale passing 50.

Openers Steve James and Ian Thomas made a flying start to the innings, putting on 26 in the first four overs before Carl Greenidge had James caught behind by Toby Bailey for 12.

The total was unchanged when Thomas joined James in the pavilion after also edging one to Bailey off Australian Mathew Inness.

Dale and Michael Powell steadied the ship with a third-wicket stand of 54, but the introduction of spinners Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann paid off for Northamptonshire.

On a wicket which proved favourable for the duo, Panesar struck first to remove Powell (33), who drove to Inness at mid-off.

Matthew Maynard fell to the same combination for 19, while Mark Wallace also looked to be settling at the crease until he was snapped up by Panesar off Swann for 25.

Dale reached his half-century but could only add another two runs before he was caught at the second attempt by Robert White at silly mid-on just before stumps to give Swann his second victim and ensure Northamptonshire are firmly in the driving seat.

The home side had earlier resumed on 205 for three, already 61 runs ahead, but made a shaky start when they lost Jeff Cook third ball as he was trapped leg before by Robert Croft.

But Tony Penberthy continued in the form he had left off in the previous evening and was hitting the ball to all parts - including a pull over deep midwicket off Dean Cosker - while Matt Cassar looked in equally good nick.

Penberthy appeared to be heading for his second century of the season but he fell agonisingly short as Glamorgan's decision to take the new ball paid off immediately.

Michael Kasprowicz was brought into the attack and trapped Penberthy lbw for 99 to end the 140-run partnership, before Andrew Davies struck twice in two balls to remove Swann and Bailey, both caught behind by Wallace.

Wallace pounced again to account for Cassar after an impressive 68 and Kasprowicz completed a double wicket maiden by trapping Panesar lbw.

With the new ball swinging and seaming, the Northamptonshire batsmen were suddenly dropping like flies, and Inness was the last to go when he was clean bowled by Davies, who matched Kasprowicz's four-wicket haul.
