Glamorgan crush Yorkshire

David Harrison took five for 26 and smashed 37 not out as Glamorgan beat Yorkshire by nine wickets in the Norwich Union League at Headingley.
Harrison's performance, which included a spell of five wickets for 10 runs in 26 balls, saw Yorkshire hustled out for 167.

And Robert Croft and Ian Thomas helped themselves to half-centuries as the Dragons strolled home with more than 20 overs to spare.

The victory lifts Glamorgan to the top of the First Division at the expense of Worcestershire Royals.

Any hopes Yorkshire had of staging a remarkable recovery were dashed by an opening stand of 102 in under 14 overs between Croft and Thomas.

The off-spinner struck 10 fours and a six in his typically aggressive 45-ball 59, while Thomas drove, cut and pulled his way to an unbeaten 55 off 68 balls.

Such was Yorkshire's plight that Ryan Sidebottom's dismissal of Croft, bowled between bat and pad, represented their sole success in the field.

That Yorkshire reached 167 was something of a success given their capitulation to 103 for nine, with Sidebottom and Richard Blakey the only batsmen to offer sustained resistance.

The stand-in skipper lofted Croft to Matthew Maynard as he went in search of the boundary that would have taken him to 50, leaving Sidebottom undefeated on 30.

Matthew Wood and Craig White compiled an opening partnership worth 35 and even when they were both back in the pavilion with the score not yet past 50, the hosts were not unduly worried.

Wood managed two off-driven boundaries in his 13 before bottom-edging Owen Parkin to Mark Wallace behind the stumps, and the same bowler did for White, taken at first slip by Maynard courtesy of a more orthodox nick.

Then Harrison induced an edge from Tim Bresnan, bowled Vic Craven through the gate, four balls after having him dropped by Davies at extra cover, and got one to rear viciously at Gary Fellows first up.

Matthew Elliott fell attempting to force off the back-foot - and Harrison completed his five-wicket haul when Michael Lumb spooned a catch to Mike Powell at deep square-leg.

The demise of Richard Dawson - run out without scoring - and Steve Kirby - lbw to Davies - left Yorkshire staring down the barrel of their lowest Norwich Union total of the season, but Blakey and Sidebottom saved the hosts' blushes, but only until Glamorgan's onslaught.
