Wallace’s inclusion in the Academy (one of three players to have a second year in Australia) is not surprising after a pleasing season for the club, in which he scored his maiden century and already has 53 dismissals to his name.
Jones though has graduated from the Academy and was named in a 16-man squad to tour Australia, along with Stephen Harmison. There was no room for Surrey’s Alex Tudor in a squad bristling with pace bowling talent. Jones has also had an excellent season, and was rewarded with his Test match debut at Lord’s against India. The second half of the campaign has been disrupted by injuries. Jones has been troubled by a rib injury, and his one over at Colwyn Bay was his last cricket for Glamorgan this summer. 33 wickets in just 10 matches was a decent performance before this though, and despite not being fully fit at the moment, the selectors decided that he would be worth taking along. Jones is perhaps more likely to deputise for Darren Gough if he misses any games, adding more pace to the attack, where as Harmison gets steeper bounce, more like Andy Caddick and Andy Flintoff. If all the bowlers are fit, Jones may not feature in the team, although his one performance so far suggests he has the temperament to succeed.
