Powell praises Dragons' high standards
By Ananova September 16 2002
Glamorgan Dragons' man of the match Mike Powell attributed his side's Norwich Union League Division One championship victory to the high standards the players had maintained throughout the season.
The Dragons clinched the title with a thrilling four-run win over reigning champions Kent Spitfires at Canterbury.

Glamorgan had to endure some anxious moments after Powell had helped them post 226 for seven with 74 from 83 balls.

The Spitfires were cruising at one stage at 136 for three in reply but lost their next six wickets for 86 runs, falling short at 222 for nine to allow Glamorgan to lift the trophy they last won in 1993 when it was known as the AXA Equity & Law League.

"We've played some good cricket lately and to come down here and win like this makes it a wonderful day," said Powell.

"It did nip around a little bit today, there was a little bit of swing, but we rode our luck."

Skipper for day Robert Croft praised the collective team spirit and suggested that the success could lay the foundation for further glory in the future.

Croft said: "We have had some tough times but we have shown spirit to come back and I am proud to be part of it.

"They are good guys and they all offered me bits of advice out there today. We got our heads on and stuck to the task."
