Glamorgan seal NUL title

Glamorgan Dragons have won the Norwich Union League title - their first major trophy for five years, repeating their feats of 1993 at Canterbury.
The Welshmen defeated reigning champions Kent Spitfires by four runs at Canterbury.

Michael Powell won the man-of-the-match award for his 83-ball 74 as Glamorgan posted a modest target of 226 for seven off 45 overs.

But the Spitfires crashed from a commanding position of 136 for three in the 31st over to 222 for nine by the time they ran out of time.

Only Powell truly dominated in the Glamorgan innings, but Matthew Maynard (33), Adrian Dale (43) and David Hemp (37) all did just enough.

Pinch-hitter Croft (14) fell to Kent paceman Ben Trott at the end of the sixth over while Ian Thomas was snapped up at mid-off by Steve Waugh off Martin Saggers for 12 to leave the Welshmen on 38 for two in the 11th over.

Maynard struck five fours and appeared well set on 33 when he was bowled through the gate by Ealham, but he helped put on 56 in little over half-an-hour in tandem with Powell.

Another vital stand followed, this time Powell teaming up with Dale to put on 63 for the fourth wicket before he was caught and bowled by Tredwell - but not before launching Waugh for a six over deep square-leg.

A third crucial partnership followed, with Hemp and Dale keeping the scorers busy with clever ones and twos, but their 61-run stand was ended when Fleming yorked the former to leave Glamorgan on 218 for five.

But Glamorgan were running out of overs and added only eight more runs to their total for the loss of Dale - bowled by Tredwell - and Mark Wallace, stumped by Nixon off Tredwell for one.

In response, Kent lost Fleming for two early on and when Robert Key (19) and Waugh (seven) went cheaply Kent were 62 for three.

But Ealham clubbed five fours and three sixes on his way to an exhilarating 98-ball 75 and helped put on 74 with Matthew Walker.

But from a position of strength, Kent lost six wickets for 82 to put the game in the balance. The last of those wickets proved to be the decider as dangerman Paul Nixon was crucially run out one short of his half-century by Dale.

Dragons paceman Mark Davies returned figures of three for 37, while there were two wickets apiece for David Harrison and Croft.
