Maynard Takes Award

At last
By Edward Hall
September 26 2002
Matthew Maynard was named as Glamorgan Player of the Year for the 2002 season, with Mark Wallace claiming the Young Player of the Year Award. It is the first time in Maynard’s 17-year career that he has claimed the award.
Maynard was given the award at the annual awards luncheon, and was probably recognition of marvellous service over the past decade rather than a celebration of the fact that he was easily Glamorgan’s best player this year. Having said that though, he passed 1000 first-class runs for the first time since 1997 (He has now reached 4 figures in a season 12 times - 3rd on the all time list). He only reached the landmark in the final game of the season, when, promoted to open the batting, smashed 50 and 151 in the draw against Northamptonshire. The personal highlight of the season must have come when he hit twin hundreds in the Championship match at Cheltenham against Gloucestershire.

Over the years, Maynard’s performances in the one-day matches have been just as important as the Championship games. His importance to this side was shown by the fact that he was top scorer in the National League. Maynard again showed how good he is under lights, hitting 87 off 72 balls in the title-decider against Worcestershire.

An award for the Young Player of the Year was given for the first time since 1998, and the lucky recipient was Mark Wallace. Wallace was a consistent performer for Glamorgan this season, playing in every Championship game, and finishing with 61 dismissals and a maiden hundred to his name. Wallace also forced his way into the one-day side, without noticeably weakening the batting due to his ability to work the balls into the gaps in the latter stages of the innings.

The other award handed out at the ceremony was the naming of Mike Kasprowicz as Glamorgan Clubman of the Year. This is a new award in memory of Byron Denning, and will be handed to the man that the players think has made the greatest contribution in and around the dressing room.
