News Round-Up
By Edward Hall
October 15 2002
In a roundup of the latest post-season news, the new contract for Simon Jones dominates proceedings, but there is also further news on Alun Evans.
Glamorgan have taken a brave, but necessary, move by extending Simon Jones’ contract by three years. It was necessary, as other counties were apparently sniffing round him, but in this age of ECB central contracts, it is possible that Jones will be contracted to England next summer, and may not feature much in the Glamorgan line-up. It is a risk that Glamorgan are willing to take though, as they try to produce a young side capable of challenging for the Championship in the next few years. Jones has had a busy time, and will jet out to Australia this week with the rest of the Ashes party. He has announced that he is fully fit and raring to go, and with Darren Gough struggling to get fit for the opening couple of Tests, it seems likely that Simon could add to his 1 Test cap over the winter.

Alun Evans meanwhile has not been having such a jolly winter. Released in the middle of the season, he claimed, in an interview in ‘The Western Telegraph’ that he had been treated unfairly. Apparently, he has had talks with a few other counties, and he does have a very good club and 2nd XI career to show, but his inability to get into the Glamorgan side suggests that he may go down the same route as Wayne Law, and not make any huge strides in his first-class career. I hope he proves me wrong. Keith Newell, as expected, was released as well, and may have similar difficulties in finding a new county.
