Jones has so far impressed on tour, working his way back from injury, and was getting up somewhere near full pace in the match against Western Australia. There, against a strong state side, he recorded his 4th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, ripping through the lower middle order either side of tea on the final day as England pushed hard for victory. In the end, they fell agonisingly short of their target, but Jones had a lot to do with the setting up of a possible target.
With Darren Gough now ruled out of the First Test, it is likely that Jones will play in Brisbane, although there are some observers who still feel that Stephen Harmison will cause trouble more consistently to the Australian batsmen. Harmison and Jones are effectively competing for one place. So far on tour, Jones has bagged more wickets, outbowling Harmison comfortably in the second innings against WA. If Jones does play in the next tour match, he will have the target of 100 first-class wickets clearly in sight, his 6 wickets in the last match taking him to 99.
Jones in Australia:
v ACB Chairman’s XI 22nd October 1 run and 8-1-53-2
v Western Australia 28th-30th October 4 runs and 14-3-49-1 and 19-1-78-5
Meanwhile, Matthew Maynard will captain the England side in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament over the weekend. After captaining the side last year, he was picked again as keeper-batsman-captain, despite the fact that he has done little keeping this season for Glamorgan due to the emergence of Mark Wallace in the one-day team. Maynard will try to guide England through Pool 2, also featuring Pakistan, Australia and Hong Kong.
The squad for the tournament is: Paul Collingwood (Durham), Adam Hollioake (Surrey), Ronnie Irani (Essex), Chris Silverwood (Yorkshire), Martin Saggers (Kent) and Glen Chapple (Lancashire), Matthew Maynard (Glamorgan).
