England World Cup squad announced

Gough left out

England have named their 30 man world cup squad with Darren Gough, Marcus Trescothick and Geraint Jones missing out. Ian Blackwell has also missed out but Ashley Giles has been included after leaving the ashes tour to tend to his ill wife.

The squad also includes Amjad Khan, Mal Loye, Graham Onions and Ravi Bopara who have impressed on the county scene.

Gerant Jones, who started the ashes as first choice keeper, is now finding himself picked over Nixon, Read and Prior.

Trescothick has not been mentioned by the selectors since his departure before the ashes and has not been selected. Marcus is the only player to score a one day century this year but the selectors obviously thought that his mind still not up for the job.

"I live near Marcus in Bristol and have been monitoring his recovery," chairman of selectors David Graveney said. "We decided not to consider him for World Cup selection."

Darren Gough has been left out along with Ian Blackwell but the selectors chose to select Ashley Giles who will probably serve as back up to Monty Panesar.

"Darren Gough, Ian Blackwell and [Yorkshire seamer] Tim Bresnan were not selected because they have not been able to prove that their fitness will be at a suitable level when we announce our final squad," said Graveney.

"We are eager to ensure everyone is given every chance to prove their fitness but we are not prepared to select players that we anticipate will not reach a satisfactory level of fitness for what will be a gruelling tournament.

"Things are progressing well with Ashley [Giles] and he welcomes the opportunity to be included in the squad of 30."

With recent poor performances from Vaughan and Flintoff, should they be dropped?
