Flintoff Expelled

Flintoff
By Caroline
March 18 2007
Well well well, like a badly behaved schoolboy, all rounder Andrew Flintoff got a naughty telling off and was dropped by England, ahead of today’s match, as he got caught intoxicated by alcohol, in the sea early hours of Saturday morning.

Liam Plunkett, James Anderson, Jon Lewis and Ian Bell were fined after being spotted by supporters in a nightclub, after the disappointing defeat against New Zealand. Flintoff was then made an example of, being dropped by England ahead of today’s match against Canada, which is still playing, right at this moment.

How did people/press find out? According to various newspapers and media, a number of supporters sent e-mails to various newspapers explaining what they had seen. The newspapers then got in touch with the team management, who took further action.

Questions, so many questions everyone will be asking. Should they be allowed to go out? Should they be allowed to drink? Is disciplining them really necessary? Are we being too stern? Is this a complete over reaction? Will this make others think next time? Will there be a next time?

You bet your money on it, this debate won’t be over for a long time and plenty of people have had their say on the matter in hand.

Former England Captain and now commentator Nasser Hussein explained his thoughts on the matter, “"To be out till three or four o'clock after a match in which you have lost - you should be back at the hotel thinking about what has gone wrong not out gallivanting round enjoying yourself.

"There are certain individuals in the side that do like to have a jolly but there is a time and a place.

"Duncan has been very strict on those sorts of things in the past. There is always a time when he will say `Go let your hair down lads' but not during a World Cup.

"I don't think it is a great scenario for the lads. They are not doing themselves any favours carrying on the way they are carrying on.

"This is a World Cup and you should be doing everything as a player to enhance your performance - not going out nightclubbing during the actual tournament."

Could anyone put a positive spin on this? I mean, for years we have wanted our management to be strong, and now they have, but to our expense.

Ian Botham, however, has a different view, “"I think it's an over-reaction.

"Did people complain in 2005 when we won the Ashes? Some people go to bed at 10.30pm tired, other people like to go for a drink."

And with that, I leave you to think, what is your opinion?
