England in Batsman Crisis

Pietersen
By Tom Bason May 9 2007
In just 9 days the first ball will be bowled at Lords of the West Indies tour of England, with England potentially desperately short of senior batsmen. Potentially, England could be without captain Michael Vaughan, Kevin Pietersen and Marcus Trescothick.

Pietersen picked up his injury on Monday, while in the field during Hampshires 8 wicket win over Ireland. Pietersen went on to bat, and hit an unbeaten 66 off 71 balls despite the injury, without needing a runner. However, a subsequent MRI scan revealed the strain and Hampshire ruled him out of this weeks 4-day County Championship match with Lancashire.

This is a definite blow to England's chances in the first Test, with Pietersen now firmly established as England's premier batsman.  In addition to Pietersen's injury, England are likely to be without Michael Vaughan broke his finger last week, ironically against Pietersen's team, Hampshirend Marcus Trescothick who hasn't appeared for England since last summer with stress-relate problems. Despite this, Trescothick has started 2007 in fine form for Somerset, scoring an unbeaten 185 yesterday against Northampton and is currently averaging 76.  With these 3 absentee's, it is likely that England will have to pick an inexperienced batting line-up, with Owais Shah likely to be among those looking for a recall.

Good innings from Prior yesterday, he played very well. Ian Bell now averages 121 when batting at number 6 (Sm2)
