With John Carew being described as "a cross between Maradona, Pele and Bambi on ice" by Sky Sports Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling, Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has a reason to be optimistic about their campaign in Europe and, despite their loss to Stoke last weekend, on the domestic front. Speaking before their training session with, we mean, their UEFA Cup match with FH Hafnarfjordur, the Irishman insisted that they will be challengers for Europe's Carling Cup competition, sort of. "I think we are contenders. I think we would be that, but we wouldn't have any guarantees," he offered, trying valiantly not to give Villa fans false hope. They've been let down before.
