MATTHEW HOGGARD TO PLAY FOR SCOTLAND

Matthew Hoggard has made himself available for Scotland’s campaign to win the Twenty20 World Cup which takes place in South Africa in September. Although he has played 26 One Day Internationals for England he hasn’t added to that tally since April 2006.
Hoggard believed that he was born in Leeds, however a recent chat with his parents revealed that he was born in Scotland while his parents were on holiday.

Hoggard said, “I was born on New Years Eve in 1976. My parents had gone up to Scotland with friends to celebrate New Year, Scottish style, and the excitement must have brought me out early. I was born in Scotland but my birth was registered back home in Yorkshire, so I’m still a Yorkshire lad and very proud of it. I got talking to former Yorkshire players John Blain and Gavin Hamilton and told them what my parents had told me. They said that I should join them in the Caribbean for the current World Cup, but unfortunately it was too late to make the squad by then.”

The news that Hoggard plans a one-day switch should not worry supporters of the England Test side. 62 matches and 235 Test wickets in England colours have seen the Yorkshire man become an integral part of the England setup. “I still intend to play Test cricket for England. I enjoy the five-day game and wouldn’t want to give that up so I will play one-dayers for Scotland and Test matches for England. I’ve always liked Scotland and have spent a lot of time in South Africa so the Twenty20 World Cup would be great fun and I hear they need a new captain so you never know.”
