Title hopes suffer setback
By Richard Watts August 12 2007
Yorkshire’s title hopes suffered a set back with a crushing defeat at the hands of the old enemy, Lancashire, at Headingley. Lancashire won by an innings and 126 runs and dominated the game from start to finish and on this form are by far the best side in the country.

The game was lost on the opening day.   After winning the toss Yorkshire were reduced to 22 for 5 thanks to fine pace bowling by Chapple and Mahmood, 3 runs (all to Sayers) between the top four as White, McGrath and Younus Khan all failed to trouble the scorers.  There was a mini fight back between Rashid (34) and Bresnan (39) but a final total of 144 was totally inadequate.

Lancashire had the better of the batting conditions but Yorkshire’s meagre total was put into perspective as Lancashire passed the home teams total with only two wickets down and then more than exceeded it thanks to a brilliant partnership of 258 by Horton who made 149 and Stewart Law 206 (250 balls, 27 fours & 2 sixes).  Lancashire stood on 436 for 4, thanks to some fine bowling by Adil Rashid, the only bowler to come out of the game for Yorkshire with real credit, Yorkshire took the last six wickets for less than 100 as the red rose were bowled out for 517.  Rashid 33-2-109-3.

Yorkshire needed some substantial innings to save the game but it never happened as Murali was seen at his best taking 5 for 66.  No one past fifty, night watchman Gillespie’s 44 the best.  Anthony McGrath made 40.

Yorkshire have to put this one down as a bad day at the office and move on quickly.  Adil Rashid has again shown what an outstanding all round cricketer that he is.
