End of season report
By Richard Watts
October 8 2007
Much improved but it could have been even better sums up Yorkshire’s 2007 season for me. Sixth in the Championship, yes this was the same position as last season but while last season relegation looked likely all year, this year that was never the case and with two games to go the Tykes were still in with a shout for the title after being on top for most of the season.

One Day cricket performances also moved in the right direction, after spending last season at the bottom of the Pro 40, this was a league that Yorkshire headed for a good part of the season.  So after the winter of discontent the new Gough/Moxon team must be pleased with the way things tinged with slight disappointment with the why things slipped in the later part of the season.

How did the individual players fair:

Joe Sayers – his season mirrored Yorkshire’s; brilliant at the start of the season and then fell away latterly.  Played a major part in the winning run at the start, if he scored a 100 batting all day it laid a great platform for huge totals.  Looked to be an International in the making but after receiving his county cap his fortunes slipped and he ultimately lost his place.  At his best he is the new Boycott but Boycott would never have allowed himself to dip so much in form.  He needs to get back on track quickly next season and then maintain consistency.

Craig White – no longer a regular in the side but retains plenty of ability and scored runs in both form of the game.  Remains a vital member of Yorkshire’s first team pool.

Michael Vaughan – more Yorkshire appearances than in recent seasons and played well enough without making the major scores that you would hope to see from a player of his pedigree.

Andrew Gale – plenty of runs in the second team and established himself as a regular in the One Day side, had to wait for this championship opportunity till the end of the season and made a good half century against Sussex.

Anthony McGrath – a great season, just missed out on 1,000 runs in the Championship (931) and averaged over 50 in the One Day game, consistently Yorkshire’s best home bred batsman and invaluable to the side.

Jacques Rudolph – over 1,000 runs and had a great season in all forms of cricket.  Cannot pay him a higher compliment other than to say that he did so well that Darren Lehmann was not missed in the middle order.

Younus Khan – a class player and Yorkshire’s passed three figures twice and a double century once but made over 50% of his first class runs in three innings so not as consistent and would have been hoped.  Under achieved in the One Day game, his season was a combination of some very good moments and a few mediocre ones but on the whole a success.

Inzamam Ul Haq – looked a good signing to add impetous to Yorkshire’s Championship challenge but failed to deliver with only 89 runs in four first class innings.

Gerard Brophy – after a poor first season for Yorkshire showed his true worth in 2007, capable performances behind the stumps and contributed with the bat in all forms of the game.  Firmly established as Yorkshire’s first choice behind the stumps.

Richard Pyrah – became a regular in the One day side and contributed with bat and ball as well as some outstanding fielding.  Remains to be seen if he can break into the four day side but his One day efforts suggest that he deserves a chance.

Adil Rashid – 40 wickets and over 700 runs a great season for the youngster.  Contributed in almost every game, at the start of the season taking wickets and at the later end scoring runs.  Making rapid strides and sure to be an International cricketer before too long.

Tim Bresnan – another good season of progression is well on the way to becoming a genuine allrounder, made his maiden first class ton this season.  On the fringes of the England side with England ‘A’ and development squad call ups.

Darren Gough – did a great job as skipper and rejuvenated the side.  Played far more cricket than many expected and made major contributions with the ball and his 37 wickets at 24 in the Championship was a terrific effort

Jason Gillespie – improved on his first season and made some handy runs; but as a strike bowler he was there to take wickets and his return of 23 in the Championship must be classed as a disappointment.

Matthew Hoggard – more chance to play for Yorkshire than in recent seasons and proved what a class act he is.

Adam Lyth – good performances in the second X1 and impressive for England Under 19.  continues to look an outstanding prospect and will surely soon get the opportunity to prove that.

Greg Wood – a season of healthy progress and scored over 1,000 runs in Academy and Second X1 cricket, including a brilliant double century for the Academy.  Knocking on the door of the first team as a batsman and as his keeping continues to improve may be able to put pressure on Brophy next season.

Amjal Shahzad – a season of reasonable progress and picked up his first 5 for.

David Wainwright – a revelation when given his chance in the limited over game and became one of Yorkshire’s key bowlers with his economical spells in that form of the game.  Wasn’t given the chance in the first team in the longer form of the game, that chance will surely come soon.

Mark Lawson – just didn’t happen for him in 2007, although showed signs of getting back to form at the end of the season and hopefully his 2006 efforts will return next season.

Imran Tahir – 0 for 141 on his only appearance tells its own story.  A surprising and unsuccessful recruit.

Simon Guy – steady enough behind the stumps and although scoring heavily for the second X1 failed to carry that into the first team when given the opportunity.  Looks destined to continue to be a back up keeper.

End of season report

A reasonably fair assessment methinks.

My only major quibble would be the suggestion that Darren Gough 'did a great job as skipper'. Whilst he bowled very very well, it could be argued that his captaincy cost us a number of games. This was particularly the case in the one-day formats where he persistently under-bowled his best bowlers (inc. himself) and looked totally out of his depth on occasion.
