New Plans
v Worcestershire 20/20 @ New Road Sunday 9 July 2006
(3:00 start)
The last away game of the 20/20 campaign of 2006 for Somerset needs to be the start of a plan of campaign for the two remaining areas of competition in the season. Promotion possibilities in the longer format are nearly out of our reach and the difficulties we have exhibited this year don't exactly bring the optimism of changes bubbling to the surface and so we need to look towards the 40 over league for something. These last two games need to bring the confidence of two wins to a side badly needing it and give everyone some indication of the game plan for the longer short game.
Cameron will be on more familiar ground but still needs to look at his bowling strategy for the 40 over games. Caddick will be an option but not his main one because Andrew C is not primarily a one day bowler. But he needs to utilise and marshall his ball forces better (and they need to perform for him more economically) and he needs some backbone in the one day middle order. Today's side will probably vary little from the Bristol one. One would hope that Wes Durston will return to bolster the batting line-up at least (he seems to doubt him as a bowling option in these games) Gareth Andrew may be the one who isn't sure until the last minute about his place, seam or spin? Seam or spin? Richard Johnson may lose out because of the amount of runs he went for on Friday (although he was not alone).
It would be nice to use this game to give others a chance. It is highly unlikely that this will happen given the lack of use of these opportunities in the past. We shall wait and see at 3.
