Still There!
v Essex CC2 @ Southend Wednesday 2 - 5 August 2006
And once again, the question is..."What can we learn from this defeat?". A four day game achieved but a loss by 211 runs after we gave the game away with a first innings collapse of huge proportions left us little to pplay for chasing over 500 for the sniff of a draw.
The side was young admittedly. As someone pointed out on the forum, the first 8 players were all under 25 with Matt Wood weighing in as the oldest. Vic Marks commented on the gamble you take playing a young side when inexperience shows and the game falls apart. But once again we were ripped open by bowlers not in the bloom of youth or any kind of form. When did Alex Tudor last put in this kind of performance (or any kind of performance for that matter). It is becoming worrying that we don't show the other side of our possible performances with the same regularity as we under perform I suppose. Mark Saggers on TMS also commented on a conversation he had had with Giles at a dinner earlier in the week when, as he put it, the performances of Somerset didn't even get the Chairman's 'vote of confidence'...everyone is down and demoralised as this season lurches from one inevitable result to another with the occasional glitch...in the sense that we win one!
But, there were glimpses of hope and something to hang our optimism on. Andy Caddick bowled his heart out and got results...nice to see that him and Goughie still have something to give! 8 for 192 wasn't wonderful overall but 5 for 82 in the first innings could have been a significant contribution if the batting had held up. Charl Willoughby is the find of the season...another strong and committed performance and Munday got three in his path to the first team spin place. The rest of the ball crew were solid - Peter Trego a bit variable but he did get one.
The batting? Woeful I'm afraid but defenc from Neil Edwards suggested he may have a future with the club yet. 44 in the first innings was the only performance of note really but Matt with 50 and Cameron with another ton did put a decent total together in the second but the damage had already been done with that 133 when we had Essex rocking after a good first session bowling stint.
On we go....I'm off for two weeks, I'll try and post something about the Gloucestershire and Derbyshire games but I'll be back with the Yorkshire game. Enjoy what you can you fellow masochists!!
