El Capitan
v Glamorgan CC2 @ Taunton Tuesday 15 August 2006
Andrew Caddick captains a Somerset side without an international, without it's flagship captain but with a little more pride than a fortnight ago after two losses but two fighting losses rather than the capitulations that we have experienced during this season. At home against a bunch of Welsh representatives we have beaten once, can we go a little further in our rehabilitation towards first class cricket performances?
The side welcomes back a regular and says hello to a 'newbie'
Wood,
Keith Parsons returns after recovering from his hand injury and Robin Lett gets is first taste of first clas cricket at 19. The right hander as been showing promise and the return to Oz of the Mighty Cameron White has offered him an oportunity we all hope he takes.
Glamorgan won the toss and in overcast conditions decided to test whether we really were the rabbits that present trends in results tended to suggest. 47 for 3 suggested that it was a good decision with Matt Wood (20), Neil Edwards (8) and Arul Supiah (1) back in the hutch. But Hildreth is findng some form and Lett took his chance and steadied the ship with the older man. 47 went into 3 figures before JH failed to kick on again and went in the 40's. Lett made a debut half ton but went without increasing it and we looked in some problems at 125.
Wes found himself in some familiar territory but has a spine now and refused to follow his team-mates. He found a solid partner with the commendable Parsons and they pushed on with an 89 run 6th wicket partnership before they both died within 2 runs of each other. 216 for 7 looked desperate but we ought to have expected a captain's innings, even at number 10! After Si Francis was bamboozled by Crofty for 3, the Cadmiester manufactured 30+ with his wicket keeper and took us into Day 2 with 255 on the board before adding over 50 with Charl wile taking is own personal score to 68 with 9 fours and 2 sixes. All out for 330 was better than under 250 but it did open the door for the visitors and we needed to shut that one quickly to make this a game we could win.
Glamorgan started their tally around lunch on Day 2 and 100 run partnership between Cosgrove and Rees sugested we were going to be on the bad end of another 4 dayer. However, Charl stopped the rot soon after the three figure milestone, removing both openers before they passed 116. Caddick and Parsons accounted for the next pair on the identical score of 179 before Willoughby finished off the day with the wicket of Grant just after the Welsh passed 200. The day ended on 240 for 5 with Wallace and Watkins making a fist of it but as Day 3 was completely lost to the weather, it is highly unlikely that we will get a result in this one. In Reading the weather is as miserable as sin and as Wisden is indicating that the match is drawn before 11:00 on Day 4 we may not have any play at all on the final day.
