So....Where are we?

What's up Boss?
By Grockle April 1 2008
Somerset are into the first month of the 2008 season. Are we ready? Have we issues? What are the signs telling the supporters? Can Justin and the guys give us a good year? Is the batting ready? Is the bowling ready? Can the allrounders fill the gaps? What influence will spin have? Which player is being prepared for later leadership?

Justin Langer will be meeting his 2008 season squad later this month.  Some of them will have had a chance to get a feel in the friendlies beforehand but do we have enough forf Division 1?

Marcus Trescothick is obviously a welcome permanent addition to this season. Now he's decided his career path we know we will have his talent on tap as long as he stays fit.  You just have to put that on the positive side of the equation.  He's still an England opener irrespective of whether he wears the 3 lions ever again or not.

Neil Edwards is expected to be a prime member of this side this year.  He has become a frontline batsman rather than a support player and we have to expect big things from him.  We need him to stamp his own authority on front end stands as he did last year.  If he doesn't we have a front three issue which may require John Francis to show he is on his way back in what must be his last season to prove himself in the Somerset first team.

Big season for James Hildreth. This is the one where he comes of age.  He isn't the upcoming youngster any more, he needs to develop into the 'big player' to push his career to the next level.  Another one who stamped his authority last year and needs to do that from the start this year.

These 4 must scare many bowling attacks.  There's 250 - 300 runs in the willow of our front end on a good day and we need loads of good days - especially in the first innings of CC games.

Ian Blackwell is the main man in our middle order.  He needs to be the catalyst for a big push from the centre if anything goes wrong up front.  He is our main holding spinner and if he doesn't do his job there it is harder for us to employ spin elsewhere in a more attacking role.  He wasn't devastating with the bat last year and we want to see that again.  Omari Banks is looking for a first team spot Ian....let's see your best game

Peter Trego our main 'seamer' allrounder.  Looked real good at the end of last season and another player we want big big big things from.  He can belt the ball and looks to be enjoying his batting.  We also need him in that 3rd/4th seamer position.  Which one he becomes will determine his real allround potential.  Need a HUGE season from this man.

Craig Kieswetter would be my first choice everytime but there are indications that Carl Gazzard is coming back and making a fight of it.  We need a big batting safe handling "wickie".  It's a key position in our line-up.  Personally I think Craig shaves it but he needs to work at it.

We have loads of stuff here.  Carl Gazzard is looking for a position as a batsman/keeper.  Wes Durston is pushing everyone here with the willow, he is reliable and a pressure man.  Arul Suppiah is more available than he was last year and he has a fielding prowess that may give him the edge in a close decision.  Rob Woodman will also be looking for a position quite soon, maybe not this year.   Our middle order tends to be 'one dayish' in their view of the game and we may need a more sensible approach in more Championship games.  Who will show the maturity to be reliable but still have the talent to murder poor attacks when necessary?

Steff Jones has certainly set his stall out early through his performances in Dubai...he's also shown that he has the confidence of the management and has leadership capabilities we possibly hadn't expected.  Ben Phillips is finally a contestant for a place but his value will depend on early performances, when and if he gets a chance. Mike Munday has to be a major consideration for this seasoon.  Irrespective of his performance in the last game of last season, he has to be a factor in this season where we will play on far more spinning wickets.  Is he what we hope he is?  Well if we don't play him we'll never know! Mark Turner also has to turn the promise he showed in his first run out into first team success when he gets the opportunity.  If not this season then next because he is the future we are hoping for.

These three are the main guys for our 8 and 9 positions along with Alfonso Thomas who is the big fast 'dark horse' in this race and we shall have to see what influence he has on the whole scenario.

Last but by no means least, the pair who keep on producing the goods that back up the runs of the front end or keep us in games we nearly throw.  Charl Willoughby and Andy Caddick. The left hand/right hand consistent scary opening attack that no-one in any division can take for granted.  It is vitally important that we don't over play these "two gems" and that they stay fit.  If the top ennd do their job then these two will provide the icing for all the cakes and possibly decide whether we see silver in the longer formats.  There can't be many more stupendous season in them but I just hope for one really marvellous on.  Partly to show that the best English bowler (how ever old he is) was in England for the winter and shouldn't have been and partly to give both of them a real rewarding end to storming contributions to the county.

Can we win anything?  YES.  Personally I think we have more chance in a one day or very short version of the game but a good solid start to the Championship campaign, dry wickets and perfromances from an attacking spinner plus good seam back-up and we have to be a decent bet in any game we play.  Langer may be the catalyst to something special but he needs Caddick, Trescothick, Hildreth, Willoughby, Blackwell, Munday and a batch of younger players to do their part consistently.  If this squad fires then there are very few squads that can match it's abilty.

BRING IT ON BOYS...LET'S GET STARTED!!

Brilliant to see Grockles back up and running,it has been missed.
Nice article Grockle,it's so close now you can almost smell the freshly cut grass and hear the concrete mixer.
I think we're more than capable of bringing home the bacon in the big one, this squad oozes class.
You rightly say that the start is important,so let's all get behind the boys, squeeze those loins and think, dream and breath positivity.
I can't wait.

Well done Grockle, and many thanks for getting the site back up.
He wont tell you himself but if it were not for Grockle producing this considered feature article which is a staturatory requirement to keep the site running you'd still be waiting to post and lingering at MTWD.
Why Grok wants to take everything on himself is his business, but perhaps he would now consider some degree of delegation in keeping the site up and running.
All of you can contribute features, and ensure the site does not go down as we do at MTWD.
He'll take no heed of me so why dont all you regulars with so much to say get on to him about it.

In your words lboy, Grockles is nothing more than "a chat room for a few old boys to get together and reminisce about old times and how it was much better in your day" and seldom mentions cricket so I guess none of us are able to contribute anything sensible.

Articles have always been welcomed and have been contributed in the past. But thanks for the reminder LB.
(John I haven't got back to you either - I'll try and do that this weekend)

The problem is cricket and the winter. My error was not to move Baggy's Dubai stuff up to the frontpage. The other problem is the "automaticness" of the shutdown and the less "automatic" switch on once an update has been posted.

There ya go.

We've coped up to now and a bit of cold turkey does you all good anyway.

but there's something to report on from Friday so we'll be off and running again. The problem is then getting the stuff on at pace!!

I was not sure if we went off-line due to the chances of a Law Suit following BR's revelations on another thread, or as it was April the 1st.

But it's nice to be back, reading between the lines.

Not sure how BJ coped, No Sunday Papers, No Grockle, No Cricket on TV,Bookies must have done quite well.

Glad you found a place to chat while we were offline people. Hope MTWD were nice to you.

I've thanked them for their hospitality and for including all the great advice for how to do this properly. Why didn't I see the errors before I ask myself?

And then I realised - because this is a hobby and nobody (except me) pays for the service provided so sometimes other things take precendence - that's why...

It is sooooo useful to have people with such an extensive background in this area who can show us all the errors of our ways. If only we took the immensely valuable advice how much better our experience would be.

But we won't.

We'll just soldier on in our own clichy way. How frustrating it must be for such an agent of change to have to deal with old recalcitrants like us.

Ahh well you can't win them all can you?

Grockle you will notice the lack of posting on the subject.

It is because we all appreciate what you do to run this site. And these thinks happen from time to time.

My biggest concern was if you were OK and thankfully you are.

I speak for myself here Grockle, but I'm sure others would join in by saying that if you were to gently request small subs to help pay for the cost of keeping the site going then you'd have no problem getting some money back. Depends on how much I guess.

Having said that it would be best if you keep editorial control as the system works fine IMHO, and it is your site of course.

I appreciate your response Grockle.
Really I,m only trying to be helpful, sure you've got alife and other things to do,so why not get others on board to share the responsibility.
It works well in other places, and far better to get those features up in plenty of time rather than have to be reminded when the site goes down and people are left with just their cold Turkey sandwiches.
Is this place so precious to you that you can't use a bit of help sometimes.
Just ask and they'll be there,it's all to gain and nothing to lose.
They may be very ancient and decrepid but give 'em a chance Grockle!

Let's look at this in customer relations terms.
Tens of thousands of happy shoppers.
One disgrutled,I could do better shopper.

Sounds like you've got it right Grockle and if subs were needed to keep the ship afloat I'd be more than happy to chip in.
Subs keeping ships afloat doesn't sound right does it?
Oh well, you know what I mean.

Look folks........Grockle has said numerous times that he neither wants or needs an assistant. Can we just respect that and move on?

Personally, I'll happily put up with the very occasional downtime to preserve the unique nature of this place, which I think he's right would almost inevitably be lost if this became anything other than his virtual front room.

I think it's good for us to lose the site occasionally; it really does make us appreciate it, and the work of Grockle, all the more.

Having re-read that sentence I should perhaps say that it is not an ironical statement. I actually mean it!

Thanks people (ahhh LB if it were only true that you were just trying to help...).

Grockles is not a commercial enterprise and it is provided free because it can be. The cost isn't onerous by any means and I'm not complaining.

I've got thick enough skin to deal with little jibes from the inconsequential minority and I've frequently said I will operate in the way I see fit even though occasionally it creates little glitches.

I also have a life and it can get in the way but next week we get back to the important stuff after the diversions of the winter.

The name of the game becomes cricket...not the Chinese Olympics, the Grand National, the Premier League, City's chances of reaching the football elite.

It becomes Somerset and the willow, leather, sun and cider.

The rest is just smoke and mirrors.

My assumption was that Grockle was taking a much deserved holiday before the serious stuff starts on Friday. He certainly needs no advice on how to run this site, which few of us would have the wit or wisdom to do one tenth as well.

I drank no coffee on Monday and had no Grockles on Tuesday; I seem to have survived and I echo Bobstan's sentiments about appreciating things you love all the more for missing them from time to time. It's a bit like BJ going back to the horses on Easter Saturday...

And why not? The site is extremely popular.

I think you'll find that during the season us 'old codgers' will talk about cricket and little else, although I really can't see why you would get offended if we didn't.

Or actually caring. Tune in. Don't tune in. The network is free at the point of delivery and caters for those who use it.

And if we want to go and do some word association, read tales from up North, discuss relative lower league football possibilities or indulge in the mind bending of Jewish sports quizzes then we all know where we can find it and will enjoy it when we do.

Cardiff Uni tomorrow boys and girls. I'm going to try and get to the afternoon session and will let you now what I see.

Waggies and Footies we tolerate Grock,as other uncricket related threads.
Tales from up North is usually cricket-themed and is very poular,as for The Jewish sporting quiz, perhaps a bit esoteric but plenty of cricket to keep the punters happy and feel free to join in by all means.
All a question of balance really, and I prefer The MTWD version.
Dont' forget to wrap up nice and warm tomorrow Grockle.
