Tie up the loose ends at Notts

Way to go PT!
By Grockle
September 3 2008
Biggest game of the season? Some would say so and many would be right. We're struggling if we don't do some damage to the leaders in this game. A poor start is contained and reset by a 90 run 9th wicket stand between Peter Trego and Andy Caddick. Well done boys!

v Nottinghamshire LVCC1 @ Trent Bridge Wednesday 3 September 2008

Scorecard

Winning the toss seemed like a good start to this one.  Choosing to bat also seemed sensible given the conditions at the time.  But they soon changed, as did Somerset's fortunes!

Langer went into this one without the services of Neil Edwards replaced by the later batting expertise of Wes Durston.  Other than that it was a line-up with few surprises.  Steffan Jones missed out as Trescothick, de Bruyn, Hildreth, Blackwell, Trego, Kieswetter, Thomas, Caddick and Willoughby made up the eleven.

Losing the captain to a first ball duck as he expected movement which didn't come gave us the worst start and on a rain affected day we never really go a pair of batsmen in long enough to put a real partnership together.  Zander deBruyn, Hildreth and Durston went for 10 between them and even the Mighty Marcus only reached the mid-thirties before falling to Adams.

Nottinghamshires Andre Adams celebrates taking the wicket of Somersets Marcus Trescothick

Blackwell  got into the 20's before Shreck got him

Nottinghamshires Charlie Shreck celebrates after taking the wicket of Somersets Ian Blackwell

Pattinson took three - all caught behind and at one point we were 51 for 5 before Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego put something together to get us into 3 figures.

The rain broke up the afternoon and finished the day's play around the Tea interval with 143 on the board with 7 wickets down.  Not a great position to go into Day 2 but it could have been worse I suppose.

We don't have this match by the sphericals I'm afraid but we must ensure we do not give the advantage to Notts on Thursday.

Day 2

So we need a big partnership...and that becomes even more important once Alfonso goes.

Somersets Peter Trego hits out  Somersets Peter Trego hits out Somersets Peter Trego hits out

So Peter takes charge and with the help of a certain Andrew Caddick Somerset move over 200 and towards the next batting point target of 250.  When Trigger finally goes at 241 we are so close and the big man nurses Willoughby  over the gain line before we finish at 252.  Great work gentlemen Well done.

Now all we need to do is get them in and get them out as quickly and as cheaply as possible.  But that has to be done between the showers as the rain continues to affect the day.

Enter Charl with the cricketing weapon he does know how to work with - the ball. Jefferson and Adams get them to 40 and then he strikes... Both openers are dispatched by Willoughby in short order at that score; Jefferson caught behind and Adams caught Durston.

Another rain shortened day but they only have 8 wickets left and only 46 up at the end of it.  We are still 300 runs ahead and a good spell tomorrow morning could still make this game interesting (and get us more bonus points).  The Day 3 weather is no better than the first two if the forecast is to be believed but with luck it might hold off and these two sides may get a chance to make a game of this one.

Day 3 and 4

No chance at all.  The rain came in and came down and nothing was possible on either day.  We finish with a draw and stand 4 points behind Notts BUT with a game in hand and a home fixture against our rivals in third place Durham (Harmison and all) starting on Tuesday.  The has to be the game that decides our season.

It is a game we have to win

Notts and Somerset face up

Nottinghamshire currently top Division One of the LV County Championship table but meet nearest challengers Somerset in a mouth-watering encounter at Trent Bridge.

The leaders may be boosted by the return of Graeme Swann or Samit Patel from the second day of the match if they are not selected for England in the final game of the NatWest Series on Wednesday

Justin Langer is back to lead Somerset in their crucial clash against Nottinghamshire after missing the draw against Hampshire 10 days ago.

The Australia opener heads a squad which inludes Steffan Jones in addition to the XI which played in their last championship match.

Ian Blackwell scored 129 in that fixture and will be eager to continue where he left off, with another notable innings at Trent Bridge

Agreed, with Caddy and Willohgnby on that dodgy Trent Bridge wicket we have a great chance.
A perfect time and situation for a typical old style Langer innings too, head down and grind it out.
Come on boys, great position we have got ourselves in, lets give it everything

In a West Country newspaper today, Justin Langer was quoted as saying that should Somerset win their next two County Championship games, against both Nottinghamshire and Durham, then the title will be theirs for the taking.

Two wins out of two, and against two of the top three teams at that? When this season we have won just three out of twelve games so far, that is one heck of an ask.

Good luck to them - many things will need to go Somerset's way, and you Langer will have to lead from the front in every aspect of the games!

Does winning the County Championship really mean so little to you Wurzel?
Last week you told us how disillusioned you were with everything SCCC and how you were resigning from the regional committee.
Your last few posts indicate that you no longer care for the cricket.
Is this all because one player has been dropped from the 40 over games?

Very probably, but then I have been for the last few seasons.

If you mean will I be supporting Somerset? I have always supported Somerset and will always do so, but I have been very disappointed with the way the club has been run over the last couple of years.

Due to my work commitments I see very little CC cricket, so I base my thoughts on limited overs stuff. The club initially announced that due to ECB restrictions they would be limiting their Kolpak players, to save money (reduced subsidies) and to allow more home grown players a chance. We seem to have taken a backward step and brought in more players, reducing the chances for our youngsters.

If we win the CC, then brilliant we'll have won it for the first time and we'll have a trophy, but don't feel we should aim to win it at all costs. Many people have been unhappy with various aspects of our club, this year, both on and off the field.

Everyone should be treated fairly and with respect. Unfortunately this hasn't been the case this year.

The captaincy and management of our 1 day team, this year and to an extent, last year, has been poor. We have been disorganised and our field placings haven't suited our bowlers.

The plans for our ground improvements have been changed, with what it appears very little consultation with the membership.

My experience of being on an area committee is that we are there to make up the numnbers and raise money. Some folks have good contacts and work extremely hard, raising significant sums, but they don't appear to have much say, simply rubber-stamping what the management committee have often already put in place.

As for many on this forum, it seems that you'd be happy to win the CC at all costs, for me people come first.

You have every right to contribute to this forum, Wurzel, and express your preferences for cricket, as well as your personal opinions as to how the cricket is played and indeed, how the club is run.

I do not necessarily agree with all the sentiments that you have expressed, but I would defend to the hilt your right to do so without being lampooned by others.

You have probably done more for Somerset C.C.C. than a number of other people by way of your membership of the Club, your membership and work for an Area Committee and above all else, your attendance at matches in order to support our team.

I applaud you for that, and am sorry that you have been the subject of some cheap and unnecessary jibes.

I too respect wurzel's right to his opinion, but with respect, they often tend to come across more as hobby-horses than considered opinions.
I am sure I am not alone in remembering that in recent years, when Blackwell was a regular in all of our teams, Wes Durston was wurzel's "favourite player", and the poster's signature has often featured his exclusion as a "cause celebre". Now that Dusrton's in, some may say at Blackwell's expense, the argument is reversed!
You can't select every one in the squad.

Edit: Please don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that I disagree with wurzel about any given issue. Just trying to point out that every decision has a consequence - every inclusion requires an exclusion, every high priority carries with it an implication that something else is of lower priority - every fielder placed is another fielder moved. That's life!

I'd like to think that everybody who uses this forum respects others points of view.
However,if you make a comment regarding cricket or anything to do with cricket it will get responded to.
If you don't want a response then don't post an opinion, that's the very nature of a forum.
If you post an opinion expect a response.
If somebody, regardless of who it is is constantly complaining about our team, management, selcetion policy, effort levels, fielding positions, commitment, tea, coffee and biscuits then yes, they can expect a response.
I simply asked Wurzel a question about his declared lack of enthusiasm.
Please respect that.

As Bamber Gascoigne used to say, FE, "well remembered". I did indeed used to champion Wes's cause, but I have been disappointed with his limited bowling contributions this season. He's an excellent fielder and can do a good job with the bat. He, like other youngsters, needs to seize every opportunity with both hands, as there are many others waiting in the wings.

Keith Parsons is another I campaigned for, when there was a possibility he might go to Kent.

I hardly think Wes has displaced Ian, maybe Omari or Arul. Wes has been used as a specialist fielder and batsman. Omari and Arul have both bowled. Omari has usually been fairly measly with his runs when bowling, but I don't remember and outstanding batting or fielding. Arul is usually outstanding in the field and can be a reasonable batter and bowler.

In order of preference I'd pick Blackie, Arul (if Wes doesn't bowl), Wes then Omari.

I trust this is a reasonable analysis.

BTW it's BJ that's into horses, not me.

Both the umpires for this huge game are ex-Nottinghamshire openers.

It's certainly a measured response, wurzel.
Again, I stress, I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with your conclusions (although I might question whether we can continue to consider Wes a youngster!).

I was simply stating that I could understand why others might react the way they do when you seem to simply champion a succession of excluded players at the apparent expense of backing those in the side.

I think you're right about Hales being the man to make way, SP.
He didn't feature in their last match, and is the fourth opening bat on their team sheet. And they must be fairly confident Swann will be back, as they've left out their other other spinner from the last match, Ferley.

Further to the above, I see that this is Hales' championship (edit: and first-class) debut. Will it still count as such if he gets replaced before he either bats or bowls?

First-class or List A?

I had already checked in response to geordie moonraker's earlier remark. The majority of Langer's first-class scores of fifty plus have come in the latter half of the season, akltyhough he hasn't converted a fifty in the second half of the season.
His last two scores before today were in the 70s.

What price another Langer declaration? (Should the rain stop, of course - Ed)

Obviously one is not allowed to declare spuriously in order solely to deny opposition bowling points, but it could be construed as a legitimate tactic to take advantage of a recently uncovered pitch.
Apparently Langer is allowed to ask the Umpires for an"indicative ruling" as to how any declaration would be viewed before he makes it. I wonder whether he has.
