One Day Thoughts

One Day Wildcard?
By Grockle
April 10 2009
So...we'd sorted out the four day line-up and now we moved on to the one day seetup. Much more of a dice throwing exercise and well into the realms of speculation. Here's the cog whirring result and I bet some of you can come up with an entirely different scenario!

Starting point for a one day eleven?  The must haves.

Marcus Trescothick at 1.

Justin Langer in the top 3

Craig Kieswetter with the gloves and in the top 5

Charl Willoughby at number 11

Alfonso Thomas as one of the three pacemen

Other team sheet probables?

James Hildreth at least at the start of the one day campaign and hoepfull in the top 5 for every game on merit

Peter Trego as the pace allrounder taking wickets and scoring runs in large quantities

Wes Durston as a run making second spinner providing that confident middle order score and some slow variation.

So.....

1. Marcus Trescothick

2. Craig Kieswetter (Pete Trego has been tried before but this guy strikes me as the one day pinch hitter)

3. Justin Langer

4. James Hildreth (no Zander de Bruyn please. He is the 'Peter Bowler' of our one day squad - his medium pace might be useful but don't put him in a position where we rely on speed to get us up to a score)

5. Arul Suppiah the spin option with batting prowess.  Omari Banks looks a better option with the ball at the moment but his batting is a liability unless the winter was wonderful.

6. Peter Trego want this to be his season and he has to be a one day option for us.  This has to work.

7. Zander de Bruyn here for the reasons identified above and needed because he offers a solid bowling and batting option

8. Wes Durston to consolidate a good start or be the man to rely on in a tricky run situation.  will bowl in tandem with the other slow man during the middle of the innings.  Needs to ask more questions with the ball

9. Ben Phillips our "tight" man rather than our wicket taker but extends our batting in a significant way.  The other option here is Steffan Jones he of the really aggressive, under estimated batting and the inswinging yorker at the death.  an he do that and provide less than 4 an over?  If so I'd have him any day.

10. Alfonso Thomas our other death bowler and the man with more variation than we've come to expect in the past.  Bats quite well also and was our best short format bowler last year.

11. Charl Willoughby our main man but can he handle all that pressure year on year?  The others have to provide more support.

Where will Mark Turner make his play?  That's for the forum I think.  He could be an option instead of the Phillips/Jones option but can we risk the decrease in batting prowess?  he could also replace one of the spin options while Zander would move up the order perhaps?

Omari Banks? Second spin option.  Either he bowls really well or his batting improves a lot to be a competitor for the spin position ahead of Suppiah and Durston.

Munday - not unless he stuns with the ball in the four day version

Stiff? Hmmm now there could be a fly in the ointment.  Same option as Turner.  If they are taking wickets then they have to play and we have to adapt.

So that is it people....we're sorted until people get injured or don't a) score runs b) take wickets then it's perm any one from loads and play whoever is in form.

Caddick? No real possibility that he will play in one dayers unless things are going wrong or he is in the form of his life.  We'll mothball him and hope for great Championship hauls from him.

Edwards? Form is looking a bit "iffy" so his move to a one day spot may well have to wait a while.

Turner needs to be main wicket taker i tink.
Charl to keeo it tight at top, same for BP too.
Sorry but i just dont rate Banks.
Therefore my one day 11 would be -

MT, CK, JL, JH, PT, AS, WD, BP, AT, MT, CW

Means we bat down to 7 with Wes, have 2 spin options, and 5 seam options, even 6 if Hildy turns his arm over.

Clearly Steffan and Stiff can rotate with the 4 seamers 8 to 11 depending on injuries, 4 day commitments.

See Zander as a real 4 day batsman, i do rate him but feel he's too slow to be coming in at 3 or 4 in one day game and not the sort of player you want at 7 or 8 either.

Would like to see Edwards and Tres open in both formats but think Neil has a lot to do to prove he's worth his place in the 1 day team.

We'll see on the 19th i guess...

We will. God I hope Turner makes his choice a no brainer. It makes our whole season more exciting. Not sure about Stiff yet.

Omari ought to be rated IN OUR SIDE as a spinner but he has no batting and that makes him a third choice spinner.

He may become an issue in the 20/20.

The 19th will give us a view into the selectors heads though and then everything could be turned upside down.

If we have a tumble of wickets Z de B comingit at 7/8 steadies the ship. It is always vital to use up the overs because as long as there is a total on the board hen the opposition have to get it. If we do well front end Z de B is not needed and if we have 5 overs left then in comes a long handled merchant. I would go I think with
MT CK JL JH PT AS WD Z deB AT BPor MT CW

it"s harder to pick a one day team but my team would be

Marcus Trescothick
Justin Langer
Craig Kieswetter
Zander De Bruyn
James Hildreth
Wes Durston
Peter Trego
Omari Banks or Arul Suppiah
Alfonso Thomas or David Stiff
Mark Turner
Charl Willougby

I hope that are one day cricket will be good this season and we can win some trophies . it would be great if we could make it to a lords final

Re: One Day Thoughts

My starting line-up would be:

Marcus Trescothick
Craig Kieswetter
Justin Langer
James Hildreth
Zander De Bruyn (if he plays, I think that he needs to go in early enough to be able to build an innnings)
Arul Suppiah
Peter Trego
Omari Banks (or Ben Phillips)
Alfonso Thomas
Mark Turner (or David Stiff or Steffan Jones)
Charl Willougby

I hope that Neil Edwards show sufficient form to press for a place (which would probably entail Craig Kieswetter dropping down the order).

No place for Wes Durston then Wickham?

The Zander issue is a pivitol one in the one day setup (and could be solved if Neil Edwards comes into the reckoning).

If we use him you expect him to be in the top five but he doesn't have a reputation for scoring quickly and could be a sea anchor on a big score if the others don't take up the job.

However, he is a stable influence and it might be down to the form of others to create the situation where we do not need to rely on him,

The pace debate will be down to bowlers taking advantage of their opportunity or moving aside for others.

And then there is the injury issue - Lord help us if we have a major injury to a major player - the backup is flimsy in many places.

On WD, my view is that (sadly) his bowling should probably be discounted and that there are others with greater claims to a batting place.

Well he certainly has a lot to prove. I think Justin had the same view of Wes's bowling in the short game towards the end of last season.

He's bowled little in the friendlies (only in the last game against Derbyshire) but he did look better than some during that session.

Still cannot fathom any reason why Neil Edwards should not be considered for the one-day team.

I'm not at all sure about the overall strength of our one-day bowling, so would tend to favour a team packed with batting, in the hope of chasing down totals and/or setting unattainable targets.

I think my team would be:

Banger
Edwards
Langer
Kieswetter
De Bruyn
Hildreth
Durston
Suppiah
Trego
Thomas
Willoughby

---

Only two out and out bowlers, but I cannot think of any other out and out bowlers that cry out "pick me," in the short format. I'd consider adding Mark Turner in place of one of the batsmen on a quicker pitch.

Otherwise, we're looking at Pete and Zander as seamers 3 and 4, with Hildreth filling in as seamer 5. Arul and Wes can offer some slow stuff.

I realise this may appear somewhat odd, but I think I'd rather have the batting of each of the guys I've named, as opposed to the bowling of a Steffan Jones or a Ben Phillips or an Omari Banks in the short form of the game.

I've put Kieswetter at four. I actually think that, Banger aside, he is probably already our best one-day batsman.

btw... Grockle.. I don't think Kiewswetter is a 'pinch hitter,' though. I do think Pete has more of the natural flair for that. But I'd rather keep both for later on and pick two attacking (specialist) opening batsmen, which is what I have done..

Yes AG pinch hitter was the wrong phrase. I was thinking more of two players who can hit a ball in the first 15 overs with CK as the out and out hitter and banger playing either that role or the anchor (both of which he is admirable at).

Trigger has a big role, as does Hildreth as the consolidator. I hope not to see Zander in a significant role because if he is employed regularly as the one we build an innings around then we are failing to get off to a start and are simply putting off problems for 2010.

We need to gamble and have faith in the guys who are gonna be the basis of the side for the next four plus years.

Some interesting thoughts have been expressed above.

I'm not going to pick an eleven, but there is one name that I would like to throw into the hat, which has not had a mention on here up until now.

That name is Carl Gazzard. I was impressed by his attitude as reported in an article on the official site a week or so ago.

To play him as a wicket keeper is not an option, unless there is an injury to Craig Kieswetter, so I am talking about him as a batter only.

Not quite sure at the moment where I would put him in the batting order (certainly for the longer version [50 overs] of the one - day game), but I would like to see him given a chance.

I don't think that he would let Somerset down.

He did an exemplary job at the start of his one day career in such a role CP but whether he is top five material and whether we can afford him in a non bowling role above that number is a question.

But it is up to him to prove his ability and he has been loyal to the county when he knows his only wicketkeeping call up is in the scenario you outline. I'm sure if they give him the opportunity then he'll give it everything

I have the sneaking impression that Brian Rose and, maybe, Justin Langer think that Kieswetter has so much ability and potential with the bat that - if that does not translate into runs in the CC in the first part of this summer - we might see Gazzard in the CC team as keeper and Kieswetter asked to focus entirely on his batting for a while.

Just a hunch...

... I'd love to see Gazzard in the side, but playing Kieswetter only as a batsman would hardly improve his chance of playing for England.

Playing only as batsmen doesn't seem to have harmed the England prospects of Prior, Ambrose or GoJo, old boy!

The one day side can differ from the CC one but I'm not sure there's always good reason, a little bit of "squad rotation" perhaps.

For my money only two players not in the first choice CC lineup would make it in.

Ben Phillips for his tight bowling and occasional batting contributions and Wes Durston for his penchant for the quick 30/40.

On the other side of things, you can make a case for Neil Edwards being a specialist CC opener with CK moving up to the top.

But otherwise it's as you were. How Mark Turner a pacy but inconsistent bowler warrants selection in the one day but not CC is not clear. If he can't get a place in the longer form, he's not the right man to replace Caddick, Ben Philipps is.

Re: One Day Thoughts
Posted by: AGod (IP Logged)
Date: 14/04/2009 10:52

Ben Phillips is never likely to be fit enough for long enough to ever come close to replacing Caddick, quite apart from the quality short-fall that both he and Turner have when compared to the great man.

Re: One Day Thoughts
Posted by: Grockle (IP Logged)
Date: 14/04/2009 11:56

Phillips will never provide you with anything close to 10 wickets in a Championship game. He may be a good line and length man but he isn't a big wicket taker. He is your stopper.

If anyone presently is the replacement for ARC it is Charl Willoughby. None of the others in the line-up compare although some may start to look a little more like it this year and Mark Turner has to be our biggest hope doesn't he?

Alfonso Thomas and Jos Butler in the squad. Expect Alfonso to play but Justin will probably take his place. Good to see the 17 year old being included though. Really good prospect
