Tykes Tumble - Taunton Day 3

See Ya 2003!
By Grockle
May 11 2002
Marcus sends the Champions away to lick their wounds in a topsy turvy match. But the real hero was Blackwell on the first day when we were down that creek again without the motion implement!

v YORKSHIRE CC1 @ TAUNTON 8 MAY 2002

DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 NUL

Four balls...

It took four balls to get the Yorkshire lot out and no addition to the score.  Mr Caddick's last county wicket of 2002 probably and 8 wickets in his only appearance wasn't too bad.  The problem was then, would we be able to hold an innings together for the first time this year?

At 32 it was familiar.  Why does Buzz have great seasons for Tasmania followed by a bout of poor scores for us when it's cold?  Dry Blackthorn withdrawal symptoms if you ask me.  He went clean bowled for only 17.  The supporters settled down for another rollercoaster ride to despair!

Mike Burns hasn't had his solid start this year either really but he managed to put on 34 before he went for 6 and we were 66 for 2 needing 262.  Peter Bowler and Marcus Trescothick - now what we needed was Bowler to set up shop at one end and leave the extravagant stuff to Banger.  Funnily enough that seems to be exactly what we got.   Banger hit himself into the prediction league by putting on 167 with Bowler QC and his 134 off 177 balls with 18 fours and 3 sixes was partnered  by 'Rumpole's 79 off almost as many balls with 11 fours and a six of his own.  Dawson suffered along with Hoggard  but no Yorkshire bowler looked like changing the game's outcome.  263 for 3 in 64 overs and we were all going home just after four having dragged a big victory from a humiliating position of 26 for 4.

We didn't really get away from them until the second session on the third day yet we stand in the situation of beating the 2001 Champions by 7 wickets in under three days.   What a zany game this cricket thing is.  We have the psychological upper hand until Scarborough and we have Surrey twice before then - looking forward to the one at the end of this month?  This is the competition where the form REALLY matters.  The rest is window dressing.  If Somerset want to be seen as a big county then the Championship has to be the only objective at the expense of everything else.

The media get it wrong (surprise there then!)...

The media were all over Trescothick's second innings knock.  He won the game for us.....WRONG!  Without Blackwell's innnings in the first phase, Banger's knock would have been insignificant.  Ian restored equality in a game that we had all but given up.  His attack on Hoggard was a catalyst for everyone else to get it right and his return with the ball to get Lehmann when he was set was almost as important.  He won us this game because he restored our confidence when the ship was sinking.  Having said that, Marcus isn't gonna be here again and leaving us with the highest total to date is probably all we could have asked for!

On to SUNDAY and hopefully a bit of humiliation for Yorkshire's second string bowlers in the form of Mr Gough.  Welcome back Jonah as well with luck.

OH YES AND....the mysterious unveiling of the Somerset 'mascot' - wonder what that is then?

Somerset Poll

Given the injury predicament and with a couple of games played with the young side, where do you now expect Somerset to finish in the CC1
